A multi-faceted primer to get you going

At first I wasn't sure about getting this book, since it's from Fine Scale Modeler. Their models can be intimidating. But all those guys started somewhere, so I went ahead and bought it. I am very happy that I did. It starts you right at the beginning and guides you toward your goal of being a very proficient modeler. What I really like about this book is that there is a project for each type of modeler. A car, a plane, a tank, a ship, etc.. But the genius of the book is that each project focuses on certain skills. If you are into cars, you could follow along with the car model, but you would limit your learning. By taking each project, one by one, you increase your skillset by leaps and bounds, then you can apply your newfound knowledge toward whatever type of modeling you want. I think that is cool. The real benefit for me was that I now really enjoy building models that aren't cars. I feel like my world has opened up and the sky is the limit. I could tell that the author knows what he is doing, and a quality finished product is what he wants for you, the reader. Get this book and get going!

Returning to modeling at 73

As a retired person with lots of time on my hands I decided to got back into modeling. Never did a lot of it but always found some time to dabble in plastic model building. When deciding on what supplies to have on hand and how to use them, I bought "The Basics of Scale Modeling" published by FineScale Modeler. I am amazed at the information in the book and how easy it was to follow the suggestions on the types of materials to use and how to use them. I am VERY pleased with the results of the first plane I've built in over 40 years. I would recommend this book as a must buy to anyone who is starting or getting back into modeling and as a good reference book to those who are currently into this great hobby.

I am a retired school teacher and other than the modeling I did as a child, I consider myself a beginner. This book gave me a lot of up to date info, and now I am able to afford more quality supplies. I am interested primarily in planes I have flown in and sailing ships. This book is a wealth of help for me. sincerely, Ken
