Simple and to the point

This is a quick read of a book with clear photos. If you're looking for a book full of theory and stories, this isn't for you. Mike's progressions are a bit different than other ring and suspension books I've read, but they make sense. The squat sequence is new to me and I'll give it a go. I purchased the Kindle version, so $10 wasn't much. Some may balk at the print book for the size of it, but the Kindle is a fair price to me.

Great book - Mike is the real deal

The reason I got this book was cause my favorite strength coach, Dan John, had written the intro. "Hey", I thought, "how bad can a book be if it includes John".

Not only the book wasn't bad, but after reading it, I ended up adding a new favorite author (Mike Gillette) in my top strength writters. Mike writtes in a nice earthly tone and gives you everything you need to know about getting strong with bodyweight exercises and rings. No marketing fluff, no exagerations, no bs.

Mike is the real deal. As bodyweight exercise enthusiast and author I can see just by reading this book that Mike not only walks the talk, but he walks it as well.

Why train with rings?

One of the most important reasons a calisthenics/bodyweight exercise enthusiast should seriously consider training with rings is age. After the age of 30, your body isn't just how it used to be. I'm 30 at the moment and I already have noticed how my joints are not the indestructible adamantinum joints I thought they once were. Ring will save you from a lot of pain, or if you're already in pain they can help you to slowly re-introduce exercises you once though you wouldn't be able to do again.

Finally, a book that tells you in simple terms how to do the exercises and gives simple routines at the end. It's has none of the BS of most books. Definitely worth the e book cost but maybe not the paperback price.

This is an excellent children's story as it teaches an important life long lesson. I believe we adults should also remember this lesson as the grass is not always greener on the other side. My children loved this story and it is now one of their favorites!

Not a good fit for the kindle fire. The story is grate but should be presented to a child in print. Text on one page pictures on another gives my child nothing to look at as I read. Sad I wasted a credit. 5 star story 1star kindle format.

Amazing is the only way to describe the wide range of vegetables covered in this book. It is an excellent reference and well worth the price. I have not seen any other book that covers the botany, physiology and production of so many vegetables so well. Dr. Rubatzky has just recently retired from UC Davis to spend more time with his family. We will all miss his presence on campus; hopefully, he will continue to find the time to write.

About the Author
Ja'far us Sadiq bin Amir Mufaddal Saifuddin is the grandson of the 52nd Dai al Fatemi Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS). He is a graduate of Arabic literature from Cairo University and completed his Masters (al Faqih al Jayyid) at Al Jamea tus Saifiyah in Surat, India. He is also currently studying for a Masters Degree in Arabic Literature at ALESCO, the institute of Arabic Research and Studies, Cairo.

His background, education and experience have allowed him acquire a unique insight and perspective with wich he describes and interprets the features found in al Jame al Aqmar built in 519H/1125AD. The explanations offered in this study combine the masjid's features with its Fatemi philosophy and symbolism and bring its architecture vividly to life.

This book is compiled from a series of studies, translated from the original Arabic text, written during the restoration of al Aqmar.

This book is an amazing piece of work. The watercolor paintings, photographs and the depth and insight with which the author has handled the subject is beyond compare.
The Al-Aqmar masjid is like a secret book and the author has revealed the secrets of this building and explained every detail giving reasons. For example the masjid door is at 21 deg to the main street, the author explains its significance. However this book will be appreciated by those who have a love for Fatemid art architecture and literature. For those who love the lanes and by-lanes of Cairo. Other superflous readers may not be able to appreciate its merit.
All in all - its a collector's item. Every cent worth!

I have read this book and gone through it many times.And also i have seen al-Aqmar......the mosque in cairo which this book is all about it is a master piece and justifies the knowledge and artistic brilliance of the author who has put before us a great work.

Im a student of art my subject of interest is Islamic art in general and perticularly the art and architecture developed during the glorious Fatemi era in Egypyt. I found this book very informative.It elucidates some unique aspects of Fatemi arts which have remained covered till now.

About the Author

Frank Close is Professor of Physics at Oxford University and a Fellow of Exeter College. He was formerly the Head of the Theoretical Physics Division at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and Head of Communications and Public Education at CERN. He is the author of several books, including the best-selling Lucifer's Legacy (OUP, 2000), and was the winner of the Kelvin Medal of the Institute of Physics for his 'outstanding contributions to the public understanding of physics'. His other books include The Cosmic Onion (1983), The Particle Explosion (1987), End (1988), Too Hot to Handle (1991), and The Particle Odyssey (OUP, 2002). In 2013 Professor Close was awarded the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize for Communication of Science.

Missing formulas in Kindle version makes this book largely incomprehensible.

The book explains the basics well while glossing over most of the complexities which is fair enough for the context of the book. Not having the many formulas appear in the Kindle version is unacceptable however and makes wide sections incomprehensible.

Clinical psychologist Singer, emeritus professor at Berkeley, and former cult member Lalich (coauthor of Captive Hearts, Captive Minds) here present an instructive report on the cult phenomenon, which they regard as a growing menace around the world. They define cults as organizations that feature "coordinated programs of coercive influence and behavioral control," many religiously or politically oriented and increasingly centered on New Age self-improvement techniques that they claim are now being peddled to businesses. They enumerate the dangers of cults to the individual, particularly the attack on the sense of self; they analyze the leaders' techniques (almost all these groups are authoritarian), including isolation from family and friends, trance induction, guided imagery and indirect suggestion; they offer practical advice on methods of helping survivors to escape and recover. In 1992, Singer (emeritus adjunct, psychology, Univ. of California at Berkeley) unsuccessfully sued the American Psychological Association and the American Sociological Association, alleging conspiracy to discredit her research and destroy her reputation. That suit and this book hinge on whether Singer's theory of "coercive persuasion" (i.e., nonphysical coercion) is demonstrably valid. Fully a third of this book is a replay of Singer's previous studies and arguments, with the remainder applying her questioned paradigm to cult-associated tragedies. While Midst does present numerous examples of deceptive recruitment and other unethical practices, no new ground is broken. Further, as the title implies, Singer's approach is alarmist and often tabloidesque. Lalich's earlier Captive Hearts, Captive Minds (LJ 7/94) is a better choice, contending with cult-associated problems in a more pragmatic, more substantial, and less hysterical manner. In addition, all libraries should own a copy of J. Gordon Melton's definitive Encyclopedic Handbook of Cults in America (Garland, 1992. 2d. rev. ed.).?Bill Piekarski, Southwestern Coll. Though the title may seem sensational, the book is a well-researched, enlightening introduction to a serious subject. Singer is a clinical psychologist and emeritus adjunct professor at the University of California at Berkeley who has interviewed several thousand former cult members and testified about cults and their "thought reform" tactics; Lalich is a professional writer and former cult member. The strength of Cults in Our Midst is its clear explanation of the nature of cults, how they operate, the threat they pose to individuals, families, and society, and how others can help cult survivors escape and recover. Many types of cultic relationships are considered, from tiny religious or occult groups to the "large group awareness training" programs that have infiltrated workplaces. The book makes key distinctions between New Age ideas and the cults that use these concepts and between types of persuasion, from education to propaganda to cults' manipulative "thought reform." Excellent overview.

The outline of the book is straightforward: Part one identifies what a cult is. Ms. Singer takes care to emphasize that the term "cult" is a netural one.
Part two details the methods used by these cults. And it is in this area that the distinction between legitimate groups are distinguished from manipulative groups whose ultimate goal is to serve the will of the cult leader without criticism, rather than a beneficial goal beyond the personal service of the cult leadership.
A true self-help group, like Alcoholics Anonymous or a local church, will allow for the possibility that the convert might leave, and will not view it as a threat to the organization. As detailed by the anecdotal evidence in the book, the lengths to which the (malignant) cult leadership will stifle internal dissent and outside criticism, demonstrates the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of these cults and their inherent distrust of an individual's self-determination. This, I can tell you, is *not* what goes on in your normal neighborhood church.
The final part is instructive as it is heartbreaking, as it emphasizes the loss of children's life, and on how to get people out of the cult. As Singer's anecdotal stories about ex-cult members compound upon the reader, the proper reaction to these types of groups should be growing contempt, as many of the members seem unable to formulate any mental or spiritual foundation after having been manipulated so perversely.

An incredible eye-opener...

OK, folks, I'm one of the "culties" Singer wrote about. I have an IQ of 140, an MBA and a successful business career. None-the-less, for 27 years I followed the "advice" and received the twisted, NOT "unconditional love" of a guru. Along with my "special" friends we supported him while he lied to us about just about everything... his background, our "faults and inadequacies," and especially, about our likelihood of surviving without his "help." Pretty bizarre, definately true, and all too common. Singer and Lalich's book describes perfectly the way he ate away at our self-confidence and kept us dependant. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT BOOK! We are all more susceptable to brainwashing than we want to believe. Read the book, discuss it with your friends, with your children, with your parents. Learn the difference between a convincing argrument and being brainwashed. The mind you save may be your own. This should be required reading in every school and in every parent's group in the country.

Beware cult apologists

A word of warning against cult apologists - see the review by Lucille M. Cozzolino. Her suggested reading by James Lewis and Gordon Melton is nothing more than pushing the view of cult apologists.

They insist there is no such thing as brainwashing, mind control or whatever you wish to call it.

Melton, by the way, after the Aum Shinrikyo sarin gas attacks in Japan, was flown to Japan by the cult and once there he declared that the group could not have produced the Sarin poison gas. WRONG. They did.

For good insight into cults, try the Rick Ross website at [...] There is plenty of information on different groups, and much can also be learnt from the message boards.

It is interesting to note that the reviewer Lucille M. Cozzolino has published only one review. It is a pattern that was commonly seen when Jon Atack released A Piece of Blue Sky: Scientology, Dianetics and L. Ron Hubbard Exposed.

Don't be fooled, there are cults out there and they can be dangerous. Self-help seminars, so-called 'human potential' organisations, are also potentially dangerous and should be thoroughly investigated before one commits to a course with one of them.

Many of them employ mind control methods similar to those used by cults and the effects can be devastating. Again, for information on this, the Rick Ross website is excellent.

The Trouble Begins With The Misleading Title

This was required reading for my upper-division history course. Our assignment was to extract the author's thesis and discuss how that thesis is supported. Though the title of Clive Holmes’ book may, initially, lead you to believe that the book is centered on the understanding of the execution of Charles I, this is hardly the case. Rather, the book is a disjointed, multi-focused work that lacks an overall argument. Additionally, the book spends much time in relating the intricacies of many situations, i.e. the divisions in the armies following the defeat of the Royalists, but fails to give even scant background to other items mentioned (see page fifty-five’s isolated mention of the Five Members). By merely mentioning a person/place/item, the reader is not able to glean the significance that the author obviously believes is apparent. Though the author covered many topics, if an over-arching thesis could not be reached, perhaps the work should have been narrowed and subsequently expanded within those related topics to show the importance of these events in this to show that in this sequence these episodes together created a wholly unique outcome in history. Although another weakness of the book was the drawing-out of topics, where the author’s argument must be mined out from the last quarter of the chapter, the main failure of this book is its inability to present a cohesive argument. Though informative, the book should be regarded as a collection of articles relevant to the English Civil War, rather than a book detailing the controversy of Charles I’s beheading.

I read this book for a report due for a college class. It was very factual and was written in plain english for someone who is slightly familier with the time period and the events that took place. Good reading for the college student or history buff. Not so good for the novice or high school student.
