A researcher for the Paris-based nonprofit institute EcoPlan International here examines ways to decrease pollution caused by excessive dependence on automobiles. Urging that we support other forms of transit, the author offers a plan for redesigning the world's transportation systems--and the layouts of cities and suburbs--to encourage reliance on buses, trains, trams and nonmotorized transport. Other proposed solutions include developing automobiles less damaging to the environment and raising consciousness on this issue through education. While Zuckerman's brief is compelling and many of his suggestions worthy, his call for national and even global social reorganization requires considerably more government intervention than seems plausible. His ideas might have been better presented in a concise magazine article. Illustrations not seen by PW .

This is a far-reaching and forward-thinking attempt to answer every argument that can be made for owning and operating an automobile. Zuckerman, a Paris-based consultant, writes in an engaging and soothing style and has gathered some prodigious research to bolster his twin theses that the automobile is a fundamental cause of environmental, social, and economic difficulties and that comprehensive change is the only responsible solution. With well-documented chapters on everything from speed bumps to hitchhiking to the 100-mile-per-gallon carburetor, this book is an excellent compendium of heretofore unheard-of and hard-to-find examples, good and bad, of our relationship with the car. Although the author advocates a global effort to deal with the car crisis, the book contains plenty of good advice for small steps as well. Excellent for policymakers, planners, and strategists, but accessible to literate readers of all stripes.

PREFACE

This text started with a simple premise: as instructors, we need to teach relevant microchip technology to students and employees in semiconductor manufacturing. Unfortunately, in the semiconductor industry, changes in technology are measured in months, not years. Our challenge was to write a relevant book that would not be outdated by the time it was published. With that in mind, we researched the material and applied ourselves to writing the chapters and creating the artwork. Following the aggressive pace of Moore's law, the technical material in our book is at most only 18 to 24 months old. This permits us to keep abreast of the changing technology nodes swirling through the semiconductor industry.

This text is written for students in two-year and four-year technology programs at community colleges and universities. The text will also be a practical reference as well as a standard text in corporate and technical training classes. Students are expected to have an understanding of high school chemistry, physics, and math. Chapters are organized around the broad technologies applicable to semiconductor manufacturing. ORGANIZATION OF THE TEXT

Our goal is to accomplish three objectives:

Help technology students grasp the fundamental technologies used in manufacturing semi conductor devices. Present some of the many challenges in microchip fabrication. Instill in the reader an appreciation of the conceptual simplicity of semiconductor manufacturing.

All fundamental technical information relevant to semiconductor manufacturing is first presented in Chapters 1 to 8. Chapter 9 presents a process model overview with a general flowchart that links the major areas in a wafer fab. Chapters 10 to 19 cover each of the major processes in the fab. Finally, Chapter 20 provides an overview of the back-end process for IC assembly and packaging. The content in the process chapters (Chapters 10 to 20) addresses critical process technology, followed by the various equipment designs needed to support this technology. Each process chapter concludes with a summary of quality measures and troubleshooting issues to familiarize the student with the practical, day-to-day challenges encountered during wafer fabrication.

The latest technologies for sub-0.25 um processing are covered in detail. This includes chemical mechanical planarization (CMP), shallow trench isolation (STI), chemically amplified deep UV photoresists, step-and-scan systems, copper metallization with dual damascene, and the widespread move to process integration with cluster tools. Throughout the text, we explain all process and equipment technology in light of the long history of change in the industry. Early tools and processes are described to clarify the development of current technology. In some cases, the linkage between the latest equipment and earlier tools is obvious, while in other instances the change is dramatic.

    A good overview

    The book is over 400 pages long so of course I haven't finished it. But I started with the chapter that applies to my job. The priciples are the same, but things have changed a bit in 10 years. That said, the book is still very helpful. I hope that one day the authors will update the book, which would be a very time consuming task. I have not found a better book so far. If anyone does, please reply to my review.

    Good reference manual for overall fabrication process.

    I found the book covered all aspects of semiconductor fabrication in a very satisfactory manner. I was recently involved in a project which covered tools supporting all aspects of the fabrication process and found minimal information available on this subject.     Best of the Breed

    This book is current and well arranged. The illustrations are up-to-date in an industry that is as dynamic as current events.
    The test questions range from the simple to the complex and provide a good mix for beginning to advanced classes. You will find the PowerPoint lecture series particularly helpful. Previous exposure was Van Zant. I find this text has a better flow and a more logical presentation method. Excellent explanations are provided for such things as copper technology, and current trace-width architecture. Written at the technician/process level with good inputs from both perspectives.

    Peter Mansfield (1928–1996) corresponded regularly for the Financial Times, Economist, and London Sunday Times on Middle Eastern affairs. The author and editor of numerous works, he is best known for his comprehensive study The Arabs.

    A definitive but digestible history

    I had the opportunity to meet Peter Mansfield a few times when I worked in London between 1993 and 1994, a softly-spoken and dignified man who had made it his life's work to learn about and understand the Arab World and its relationship with the colonial powers.
    Sadly, Mansfield has since passed away, but this book remains as a beautiful epitaph that is as close to a definitive but digestible history of the Arab people as I've read.
    Recommended for those who want to understand the big picture before getting into the detail of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.

    Self-Identity and Foreign Views

    Mansfield presents a country-by-country survey of all the Arab peoples of the world. Mansfield is a historian and journalist bringing 30 years of field experience to this work.

    His analysis helps clarify how various Islamic movements have dealt with the challenges relating to modernization, technology and the modern world political system. As part of this process, he discusses the causes and results of the 1990 Gulf War.

    Note that Mansfield is focusing on Arab peoples, not all Islamic peoples of the world. However, in this process, he also includes a perspective on the relationship of the Arab countries and Islamic movements to non-Arab Islamic peoples and sects.

    This able author looks at the data in different ways, providing a multi-faceted view. He provides a historical focus, which helps to understand how we got where we are. Filling in many details often missed in the somewhat abstract chronologies we expect, Mansfield includes here an analysis by country.

    This brings to life the individual situations that are often ignored when the stock western political analysis refers to the "Arab World." As you read Mansfield's discussion of each country, you realize these are people like everyone else, trying to make sense of the puzzling forces and situations in which they are caught up. Real life rarely matches the simple back and white of political rhetoric and media sound bites.

    Extremely insightful is a third view in which Mansfield compares self-views of the various Arab peoples and the view of them by foreigners. Readers will find this book an enriching experience.

    Brilliant book

    If you're looking for a compact but detailed history and description of the Arab world, it's difficult to imagine a book that can top this one. I picked it off the shelf thinking it would be just another dull chronology - but when I examined its layout, I just had to have it. It consists of three sections: a detailed and highly readable 300-page history of the Arab world; a set of brief chapters on each Arab country; and a final short section on how the Arabs are viewed by both themselves and Westerners.
    The ability to pick a single country to read about individually is the aspect of the book that most stands out for me: I was really interested in reading about just five or six Arab countries, and I wasn't about to buy a book on each of them. This book solved the problem brilliantly.

    The first edition of this book (1970) set out a systematic basis for the analysis of binary data and in particular for the study of how the probability of 'success' depends on explanatory variables. The first edition has been widely used and the general level and style have been preserved in the second edition, which contains a substantial amount of new material. This amplifies matters dealt with only cryptically in the first edition and includes many more recent developments. In addition the whole material has been reorganized, in particular to put more emphasis on m.aximum likelihood methods.

    There are nearly 60 further results and exercises. The main points are illustrated by practical examples, many of them not in the first edition, and some general essential background material is set out in new Appendices.

    About the Author
    Allen was born in Leicester, England in 1864. After leaving school at the age of fifteen to support his family, Allen worked, read, and carefully observed the world around him. It was not until he was thirty-eight that he wrote "From Poverty to Power," one of his first motivational books. His next book, "As a Man Thinketh," established his reputation as an inspirational writer. Other books on spirituality included "The Eight Pillars of Wisdom" and "From Passion to Peace." Although his writing career lasted for only ten years, until his death in 1912, Allen produced twenty titles that influenced millions in the same manners as the words of Dale Carnegie and Norman Vincent Peale.

    Practical As a Man Thinketh

    I tend to like this book more than As a Man Thinketh.
    In this book he goes further in depth, as to how to basically apply self-control to your life.
    "As a Man thinketh ' is poetic and inspiring but lacks how to depth of understanding.
    "As a man thinketh is Gigantic, but above life's storms is profound and faith building.
    "The problems of of life are deeply rooted, but they can be fathomed and rooted out"
    "Faith is the Grey Dawn before the full and perfect day of knowldege"
    "Cease to dwell pessimistically on all the wrongs around you"
    A hidden Gem minus the Fanfare of his other blockbuster book

    Award-winning author and photographer Tony Northrup has published more than 30 how-to books and sold more than a million copies around the world. His photos have been featured on magazine covers, book covers, CD covers, TV shows, calendars, and much more. Tony studied photography at the New England School of Photography and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He runs a stock and portrait photography business with his family, Chelsea and Madelyn, out of his home studio in Waterford, CT. He shoots travel and nature photography everywhere he goes.

    This is why you want a Kindle

    I have recently purchased a Nikon 3100 and bought the corresponding "dummies" book, which about matches my photography expertise. So, now I know how to use my new camera....right? Nope. Now I need education on how to take photographs with my fancy new toy so that they look better than my iPhone snapshots. Enter Tony's book. Since there are a ton of reviews on the paper version, you can pretty much figure out that the content is excellent. I will focus on the electronic version.

    First of all, this is a great book in any form--hard copy or ebook. However, as far as I can tell, there are a bunch of great paper books out there on DSLR photography. When I downloaded the Kindle sample and read through it, I knew that the ebook format was the way to go.

    I've owned a Kindle since version 1, and now own the Fire. Tony's book should be a primer on how to properly create an ebook. The embedded links and videos, as well as the ability to grab the sample photos and enlarge for detailed study (need an Internet connection for the latter two items) is invaluable to rank photography newbs like me. The videos are top-notch and contain many side-by-side examples of how pictures are improved when applying the techniques that are covered in the video. The videos are stuck in the appropriate place in the book, which leads to excellent learning flow as you build on the lessons. The experiences on the Kindle Fire and the iPad and PC Kindle apps are equally excellent.

    Tony has indicated that he plans on improving and updating the ebook contents, which all buyers will be able to download as they become available. This is a refreshing change to the "quick scan, make a buck and forget" mentality that the big publishers follow. I will try to update my review as this new content becomes available.

    Finally, the price. Tony has evidently not subscribed to the overpriced ebook mentality that has been the source of thousands of complaints on Amazon. Compared to the phyiscal version, he is charging about half. Obviously Tony wants to sell many books reasonably rather than try to gouge us buyers. Again, very refreshing.

    I am looking forward to improving my nonexistent skills over the years using Tony's book as my teacher. No matter which version you buy, you will do well. However, I strongly suggest you go for the ebook.

    Well, it's been almost 3 years since I got this book and it's been a great journey. Couple of updates:
    - Love the fact that this e-book is with me all the time. Whenever I need to check or read up on something I can pull it up on the Kindle (which I rarely use), or on my desktop PC or even on the phone while traveling (with the kindle reader apps). The latest and greatest updated version of this book just flows through to the device of your choice instantly. I love that aspect and it really helps to fine tune your photography at leisure or whenever that great light and fantastic place happens and you just have to click, but wished you could check on some particular info.
    - The Facebook group for SDP has really grown by leaps and bounds in terms of quality as well as quantity. Lots of actually 'stunning' images are posted there everyday and get feedback from the active community which has photographers of all skill and equipment levels. Also there are weekly monthly challenges at times.
    - Recently in the Facebook group, I have been seeing many updates from readers about their pictures being published in magazines and they thank this book for helping them. Personally, that to me feels like the kind of the highest acknowledgement for this book and author.
    - There is also a separate website for this book. It's free for anyone who has purchased the book and is a great community to post your pictures, get feedback and also get some 'inside information' from the SDP world.
    - The authors have a fun and interactive live web session once in a while where they give updates happening in the photography world and also they provide comments and advice on photos posted by readers.
    - The different lighting setups mentioned in the book are great and have been really enjoying making pictures with those recently.
    - Love the video updates that keep coming once in a while. It takes learning to a whole new level. Keep 'em coming!

    Having spent many months with this book, here are a few updates to my earlier review:
    - There are a ton of advanced photography techniques covered in this book: Underwater, Star Trails, Macro, Light painting, advanced lighting techniques, etc. So it never gets boring or exhausted. As a amateur or pro photographer, there is always some challenge or technique that you can move on to.
    - The Facebook group for this book is great and everyday one can see great images clicked by readers of this book.
    - Great updated gear-buying advice
    - Did I already say this books keeps getting better with time? I have seen a number of great updates since, a lot of them based on reader feedback and needs.

    This is a fantastic find and really helped me get a lot from my DSLR camera. Excellent instructions, tons of pictures and a friendly writing style makes one feel as if a pro photographer is guiding you step by step and teaching you his tricks. There are exercises that help you retain what you learn. I recommend you do the exercises (if you are new to the technique) and not just read the book passively. That way you can employ those techniques when actually shooting pictures.

    I was under the impression that pro photographers always whipped out their cameras and right away shot their for-the-magazines-final pictures with each click. I felt editing a photograph was not ok and there were so many other myths that I had as a newbie. Being in the field for quite some time, Tony explains the need to persevere, take hundreds of pictures, keep just the good ones and discard the rest, edit and touch-up as required and so many things that made taking great pictures seem so much feasible and accessible to me. (Yes, most great work is still 99% perspiration as of today.)

    This book does not dabble in a lot of unnecessary camera lingo and settings, but just what's necessary coupled with tips and techniques to actually get those pictures. While a photography student will not mind studying all the alphabets, others like me appreciate getting straight to the point on how to get a good portrait, how to get a good landscape, what are the pitfalls to avoid, etc. So this book works great in that respect. The author mainly gives Canon/Nikon examples, but they work well for someone like me using a Sony DSLR.

    The organization of the book is great. The resources it mentions and links are great. The constant updates the author is committed to is amazing. Just yesterday, months after its release, I saw a new video added into YouTube for this book (which will make into the pages of the digital edition soon). Lots of great accessories are explained. Tony keeps in touch with the readers through the book's Facebook page and that is a great personal touch the author puts in.

    I think it will be great if the index was a little more expanded with subheadings (at least the major ones). The other day I was looking for information on RAW files (I remember reading it earlier in this book) but had a hard time finding its location.

    Overall an excellent resource for newbies and others alike. I have already recommended it to many and will continue to do so.

    This should be an example on how to write an e-book!

    I cannot say enough good things about this book.

    I have been wanting to get better at photography for awhile, but was kind of hopping around between online tutorials and tips here and there, and didn't feel I was making a lot of progress. I decided to purchase this book to make sure that I had everything in an organized manner... and I'm so glad that I did!

    The book starts at the beginning and moves through all the basic elements of photography, covering things like quick tips, composition, depth of field, lighting, etc. (Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, Camera Equipment, etc. are all covered.) After learning the basics, the book has later chapters that have detailed ideas for Portraits, landscapes, macro photography, photographing animals, weddings, night photography, underwater photography, HDR techniques, and more.

    I am a natural editor, and I can't stand to read books that have a lot of "fluff," where I am constantly trying to fix the book in my mind. While this book has quite a bit of content, it is written so that every word counts. As you read it, you never feel like you're wasting your time. Each sentence is informative and interesting and occasionally funny.

    The book is illustrated with lovely, original pictures and examples that really illustrate the principle being taught.

    However, probably the best part is the VIDEOS. As you read, there are 3 hours worth of video illustrating and reinforcing each concept being taught. It almost feels like an online course. And when you combine the fact that purchase of the book gives you access to Tony's Facebook page where people including Tony and Chelsea give tips and techniques, this book is an incredible value. It is almost like taking a photography course, but so much cheaper! Well worth the money.

    This book would be great in print, but it works especially well on an ipad or a kindle fire or something like that.

    If you want to learn more about photography, this book is for you. You won't regret getting it. I have convinced several family members to buy it as well, and they all really like it.

    And the proof is in the result. I started an album on my facebook (trying to follow Tony's tip to use your pictures) and do you know what some of my friends said? "Stunning."
