About the Author
After receiving my PhD from the University of Kansas in 1977, I came to Colorado to work as a faculty member at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where I have been ever since. I am currently a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and I teach courses in general biology, animal behavior, insect biology, and tropical biology. My research program focuses on the behavior and ecology of social insects, and I have worked on ants, bees, and wasps. I have studied the nestmate recognition, the genetics of colony defense, the behavior of defensive bees, and communication during colony defense. I was Executive Editor of Animal Behaviour from 2006-2009.

As an undergraduate, I was inspired by parasitologist Clark P. Read to think about the ecology and evolution of parasites in new ways. I was especially excited to learn that parasites affected animal behavior, another favorite subject area. Most biologists outside the world of parasitology were not interested in parasites; they were relegated to a nether world someplace between the biology of free-living organisms and medicine. After peregrination through more than one graduate program, I completed my PhD studying parasites and behavior at the University of New Mexico. I did postdoctoral work on parasite community ecology with Dan Simberloff at Florida State University, and then accepted a faculty position at Colorado State University, where I have remained since 1983. I am currently a Professor in the Department of Biology where I teach courses in invertebrate zoology, animal behavior, and history of medicine. I study a variety of aspects of parasite ecology and host behavior ranging from behavioral fever and transmission behavior to the ecology of introduced parasite species.

It's one of the few books that's changed my life.

A magnificent introduction to an aesthetic sensibility I was always aware of, and appreciated, but didn't imagine had a name. Thanks to this small but finely-honed book I now understand the intellectual underpinnings of a profound way of looking at the world. Wabi-sabi--the name of this beauty/mindset--is the perfect antidote to my frenetic, digital life. I've given this book as a gift to friends and have received many heartfelt thanks.

This exquisite little volume is food for the soul. It should be required reading for our species. It is a subtle wake-up call...which we need to take to heart...we need to re-evaluate what we produce. We need to re-evaluate the legacy we leave. This book illustrates the respect we should have for nature. It illustrates the inspiration we should find in nature.
We have become a society producing perishable goods, much of which has little or no merit. Mr. Koren opens our eyes to the merit of producing goods which earn dignity with age, use and wear. It is truly an aesthetic for our time.

Please Buy This If You're A Perfectionist.

A solid reminder that exactly what you're trying to create--in whatever manner--will not be complete until something about that process or result is imperfect. And that the true beauty is not only in that imperfection, but your acceptance of it.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who, like me, is a rigid Type A with difficulty acknowledging (let alone accepting!) that the standard Earth day is 24 hours instead of 62 and sometimes failures are our greatest successes. While not directly instructing you on the specific creation of imperfections within your own work, this book will make you uncomfortable in the most gently reassuring way while you look for the reasons for those flaws and examine the moments of personal growth they allow you and whoever may view or experience what you make secondhand.

This is an enjoyable read and a welcome addition to ...

This is an enjoyable read and a welcome addition to the relatively limited selection of true science fiction for young readers, by which I mean stories based interesting ideas and without fantasy elements. The story is suspenseful, with surprises to keep you guessing. As a parent, I also appreciate that although Landfall could be classified as either later middle grade or early YA, its subject matter and language are appropriate for children of any reading age, with a warning that it does contain some physical violence. I'm ready to read the next installment.

Gripping adventure, page-turner, my kid couldn't put it down!

My fifth grader read this book in almost one sitting--I had to make her go to sleep. She loved it so much, I read it myself. This book rocks. It's smart, engaging, the characters are sharp and fun to follow, and (my favorite aspect) the world is built so well--no details missed, all the future technology is thought out to the finest details. The plot is gripping, and as it ended I knew I had to read the second (and I did! And it's just as satisfying!). This series is a winner. Totally recommended for middle school aged kids on up.

Compelling sci-fi—even for those who aren't always fans of the genre

I have to admit I'm not a sci-fi fan; a friend recommended this for my son, so I previewed it. I soon realized I was hooked! As previous reviewers have noted, it's the well-constructed world that holds this book together and draws the reader in. The concept of humanity pooling all remaining resources and carving a semi-habitable world out of an asteroid in order to escape a dying Earth reads like a plausible "what-if" scenario that I want to learn more about. We feel the tension on the "Ship" and the emotional stake in discovering the possible existence of other humans. The fictional society's hierarchies and rites of passage serve a secondary purpose as a refreshingly subtle device to explain the world to the readers—a solution to a persistent problem with the genre. As "cadets" learn from their superiors, the reader develops a better understanding of their world, as well. One more detail: I was relieved to see a smart, strong, emotionally stable female character who does not (yet?) develop into just a romantic interest for the main male character. I look forward to the rest of the series!

Amazing Third Book!

Wow! I ***LOVED*** this book! I read it one day, it was that good. The characters were great. More than once I giggled out loud, which is good for me. And yes, I cried too. This book felt darker than the previous few. If you are looking for a book with a strong, clever heroine, (who can be friends with good-looking boys without getting *too* mushy), who solves her problems without whining about them, and pulls you in to a fast-paced adventure filled with surprises, this is the *best* option. Shannon Messenger just keeps getting better. Keeper of the Lost Cities was already my favorite when I read it the first time, then Exile came out, and Everblaze!!!...it topped everything. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone.

Kenric's death was incredibly sad. But it shows a growing point in in the series. It takes guts to kill off a character the right way. Especially one that you've allowed the characters to bond with. Compare it to the first few Percy Jackson books. Percy's mother, Tyson, Thalia, and to some extent, Annabeth all were pronounced dead, and then, surprise! they're alive. Also, the betrayal of Keefe's mom. This is where I find a *gasp* fault. It was a great plot twist, and a surprising betrayal, but it seems it was only a surprise because we only 'met' Keefe's mother in this book. Other than that, I'm blind to any faults. All in all, amazing!

Again, best book series ever!

For the past two books I've said this is my favorite series ever. The third book only helped prove my point. I love ALL the characters, though Keefe and Sandor are my favorites. There are so many twists in this series, evil and good, so if you haven't read this book, do it. I dare you!

Oh my gosh, this was the best book in the series so far. If there isn't another book, I'm not sure I'll be able to survive. The Keeper of the Lost Cities is the most amazing series I have ever read. I don't usually pick favorites, but these are by far the best books IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.

LOVE THIS BOOK

I have only been sewing for a year and I am mostly self taught. I particularly enjoy sewing lingerie, but there is not a lot of information (or even patterns) for that. I was really hesitant buying this book because there were no reviews. I took a chance because the bra construction book in the series had excellent reviews. I don't regret my decision in the least.

The book is split into three parts, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Patterns are provided in the back of the book that don't need to be enlarged.

The beginner section talks about the tools one needs to draft patterns and to sew in general. Stitches are discussed and an introduction to fabrics as well as their anatomy (grains and such). My singer lingerie book goes into more details about this which I found essential. This book could go into more detail on fabrics. Measurement charts are provided in the metric and imperial for everything which I found very nice.

One thing I really enjoyed about this book was its introduction to stretch fabrics and how to work with them. It went over some basic information that was very helpful. I wish it went more in depth, but this book is not meant for learning all of those details. I wouldn't knock points off for that.

The beginner section provides step by step instructions for making the patterns in the back of the book. If you don't like the location of the seams, an alternative step by step instruction guide is provided with just as much detail. These patterns include boy shorts, boy shorts without a side seam, wide lace boy shorts (instructions are shown to manipulate the pattern for this), classic briefs with a couple of different options for the crotch, and briefs without a front seam. There are also instructions for applying the elastic (though I wish there was slightly more detail, unfortunately fold-over elastic is not included in any section).

The Intermediate section introduces you to pattern manipulation, measurements for that, and elastic stretch charts. Creating boy shorts with a side seam is shown as well as how to do your own personal manipulations to any pattern including a cool lace attachment. French knickers are next using the "slash and spread" method which I found really cool. I've looked through lots of lingerie patterns and there are none that I found for these panties. The same goes for the key hole cut out pattern discussed next. That was really cool because once again, I've never seen a pattern for that. Puff panties are discussed and then a string bikini pattern.

The Advanced section talks about pattern drafting and grading. It includes more measurement information and charts. Customized charts are also provided for you to fill out if you wish. More information on stretch fabrics are included. I believe this is helpful for making panties that don't look bigger than they are. I've always noticed that panties I've made don't look as small as the store bought ones but they're the same size. There are a few pages of information on drafting.

The advanced section contains information on how to draft your own pattern for boy-shorts, including whether or not you want a side seam. Grading is discussed which I don't fully understand yet. I THINK it shows how to make boyshorts into hipster briefs (I haven't really read this section yet). Brief drafting is discussed along with a variation called the "hip hugger brief." A basic thong is discussed and another section on briefs.

If you can create all the patterns in this book, I imagine you are well on your way to designing other cool panties that you can't find patterns for.

I would suggest that you buy this book with the Singer lingerie construction book. That book goes into different ways to attach lace and elastic (again lack of fold over elastic techniques but that's ok). It also goes into manipulating patterns with different widths of lace or elastic and more information on fabric, lace, and elastic is provided. If you combine these books together then you have A LOT of information about pretty much everything you need to know.

I hope this helps. I def. love this book and look forward to buy the other books in the series.

Very good instructions

So far I've made 5 pairs of panties from this book, and they fit perfectly. The instructions are clear, lots of photos and diagrams so you never wonder what to do next. If you want to make your own (or someone elses) panties, this is the book to get!

BASIC Bare Essentials

Purchased both the bra and underwear books together for a great deal. I think both books are really informative and helpful, however I was dissapointed to see that there were no instructions to draft a block pattern to a standard set of measurements. As a student, I am looking to apply drafting skills to intimate apparel and it would've been great to be able to start from scratch rather than have a block already provided for us that we then need to adjust. I will say each chapter is really easy to read and makes it easy to follow along. For those of you not interested in beginning with the bottom basics of underwear pattern drafting, this book is for you.
