About the Author
Lorenzo Candelaria (Bachelor of Music, Oberlin College, 1995; Ph.D., Yale University, 2001) is an award-winning teacher and author at The University of Texas at El Paso. He is the recipient of prestigious fellowships from the Fulbright Program and the National Endowment for the Humanities and was presented with the Robert M. Stevenson Award by the American Musicological Society for his book THE ROSARY CANTORAL (2008).

Daniel Kingman is an American composer and Professor Emeritus, California State University, Sacramento.

Probably the best college text for a "survey" of American Music

In the past, there was Hitchcock, Chase, and Hamm's books. They were all "surveys" in that they started with Native American music and the music of the early settlers and progressed roughly to the present. These are outdated books as far as the "present" goes, but they are each still very good, even if what they emphasize is different. Today, though, the college teacher has two options, Richard Crawford's "Introduction to America's Music" and this book, originally by Kingman and substantially revised by L. Candelaria. Crawford's "Introduction" is really excellent in every way. It is packed full of information with all points-of-view and arguments thoroughly influenced by the most recent research. He really knows his stuff. It's organized chronologically, so, like the books above, it starts with the settlers and moves forward. My students had trouble with this book, as did I, because it takes a full third of the semester before you get to any music that most of the students have even heard of. That's why Kingman/Candelaria is, in my opinion, a uniquely successful alternative. It starts with the four historically principal categories of "folk" music (N-A, Mexican American, Anglo America, and African American) and includes another chapter on more recent kinds of folk music from other traditions. As for many students the "real" American music is "folk music," this is a great way to start off the semester and gets the class really thinking about the issues that shape the character and content of music in regions that now comprise the U.S. After that comes Blues and Rock (which I separate because I think rock needs to come AFTER all the other popular music), then big units on Sacred Music, Popular Music, and Classical Music.

At first I didn't like this approach. But after using it I realize that, if properly supplemented, it is the ticket to a successful class. Students need to know that American Music has been around for several centuries and that we can't shape our understanding of what it is by just current standards alone. So I find the book to be very balanced. Yes, the section on jazz could be larger. And I think there musical theater gets short shrift as well as American popular music from the 1920s to 1950s that isn't jazz (as in the many famous songs that reflected changing American values over those decades as well as served as standards for jazz bands).

So this needs to be supplemented. But its still the best approach for many reasons. One is that there isn't a huge amount of reading (which most students just won't do). The text that is there is, for the most part, accurate and includes very important interpretive information. I think most students feel "informed" after reading the chapter so that they can listen to music, whether it's the shape note singing of Appalachia or barrelhouse piano style or the songs of Tin Pan Alley with some solid knowledge about where these genres came from. Yes, there isn't a whole lot of historical information here. But what there is is judiciously chosen. A book on American Music of four centuries that would include all the historical background would probably have to be about 1600 pages at the minimum.

So I highly recommend this. Just be ready to add some supplemental music. For example, I used some wonderful recordings of 18th century American sacred music that has appeared in the last 15 years, particularly of the Moravian community or of Billings and the New England tunesmiths. Also, I thought there should be more popular music from the period just before and leading up to the Civil War. THere are tones of recordings out there now of this music that are available, some even using period brass instruments.

Class was cancelled and of course they are using the next version for fall when the next of this class was available. always a risk to buy ahead but even with the cost of this and the new book together and shipping I am still spent less then the new book for this class. yea

Fred S. Kleiner (Ph.D., Columbia University) is the author or co-author of the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A GLOBAL HISTORY, as well as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd editions of GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES: A CONCISE HISTORY, and more than 100 publications on Greek and Roman art and architecture, including A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART, also published by Cengage. He has taught the art history survey course for more than three decades, first at the University of Virginia and, since 1978, at Boston University, where he is currently professor of art history and archaeology. From 1985 to 1998, he was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Archaeology. Long acclaimed for his inspiring lectures and dedication to students, Professor Kleiner won Boston University's Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the College Prize for Undergraduate Advising in the Humanities in 2002, and he is a two-time winner of the Distinguished Teaching Prize in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. The text Foremost Instructions called "A Garland of Views" by Padmasambhava is regarded as one of the very important texts of the Nyingma tradition. It is very important to understand that the teachings on Dzogchen in this book are not limited to instructions on the development stage of Mahayoga. They provide a complete explanation of what Dzogchen is at all levels and are regarded in the Nyingma tradition as required reading for all Dzogchen practitioners. Through this book you will gain an excellent grounding in what Dzogchen is and how it fits into the teachings of the nine vehicles. This book is truly an amazing collection of material that is regarded as crucial for Nyingma practitioners, but has not been available till now in English with all the commentaries needed to unravel the meaning of Padmasambhava's text. The Western Lama Richard Roth, who has been well-trained in the Dzogchen system, has said what an important and well-presented book this is.

Another Stellar Work on Dzogchen Buddhism

Tony Duff has written, translated and commented upon numerous Tibetan texts chiefly dealing with dzogchen and mahamudra Buddhism. They are excellent and offer unique insights. Perhaps because the publisher isn’t main stream and the books are sometimes difficult to obtain, Tony Duff’s books haven’t always received the recognition they deserve. This latest book is among those readily available through Amazon and so hopefully it will receive the accolades it deserves.

There’s probably no more important Mahayana teacher then Padmasambhava, sometimes referred to as a second Buddha and here Tony Duff not only translates one of Padmasambhava’s principle teachings, Foremost Instructions “A Garland of Views” but includes commentaries on it by many of the great dzogchen masters.

Don’t skip the roman numerated 47 page introduction added to the fore of this short text. As in so many of his translations, here the author supplements the text with his wealth of knowledge about the dzogchen tradition. He notes his reasons for selecting particular commentaries to explain Padmasambhava’s teaching of the thirteenth chapter of the Gubyagarbha Tantra and sets the historical stage for what’s to come. You’ll be prepared for the text, but as the author himself states it won’t be an easy read.

If you follow the author’s recommendation, you will have read the first section following the forward, Longchenpa’s commentary on Chapter Thirteen of the Guhyagarbha Tantra, part way through the introduction, and thus after the forward will begin with the actual “Foremost Instruction,” which is less than 12 pages in length. It is followed by the more lengthy Mipham’s Annotational Commentary which is a must read, breaking down the text line by line for increased understanding.

Finally, don’t skip the glossary. It’s an excellent education in itself so take the time to go through it term by term. You need to know how to speak “dzogchen”. Yes, this is not for the beginner or the faint at heart, but will reward those who put in the effort to hear, reflect, and meditate on it. This book truly is a wonderful garland of views.

The translator himself seems to understand this but nevertheless can't resist the urge to insist that his own insight is superio

This is a product review -- not a review of the subject matter. The profundity of the subject matter is such that any review of its content would be inappropriate in a public forum such as this where the purpose of a review is clearly commercial. For a publication of a translation, some review could be offered concerning the translation itself. But the author/translator anticipated this and gives preemptive admonitions against such, telling us that he is an expert and that we should just abide him. Page xlv of Introduction: "We need you, the audience to have an open mind. If you are open, then we as translators can do the work of finding terminology that accurately translates Tibetan Buddhist terminology, then explain it to you, and you can help by having it accepted. That would be to everyone's benefit." That he refers to us as his "audience" indicates to me that the translator fancies himself a performer -- the book being his proscenium.

The book itself can be materially discussed in four categories: binding/printing, format/style, coherence and authenticity. The binding/printing is standard. The format/style is readable and utilizes the welcome practice of footnotes at the bottom of the page. However, there is excessive use of bold-text. Personally, I think it should be avoided altogether unless it actually exists in the original, which it doesn't in this case. There are also numerous typos which, regrettably, have become common in this age of editorial incompetence. Additionally, the editors of Padma Karpo Translation Committee either do not adhere to the standard conventions of punctuation concerning commas or do not understand them. The coherence of the text is built-in due to the translator's thoughtful ordering of the original texts. The authenticity of the original texts is universally accepted by Buddhist scholars. The authenticity of the translation remains an open question. The translator himself seems to understand this but nevertheless can't resist the urge to insist that his own insight is superior to others'. This blowing of one's own horn -- in the introduction, in the footnotes, in the postscript -- is certainly very common but still extremely annoying. In the introduction, the "Authors", Padmasambhava, Mipham and Longchen Rabjam are merely named. In the postscript, the "Author", Lama Tony Duff, gives us an impressive, first-person praise of himself and his accomplishments. Even if such praise (although coming from himself) is completely deserved, it nevertheless sullies the overall fact of the book which is about recognizing and liberating oneself from the fiction of ego.

This is a great guide for AD PowerShell scripting. While it doesn't rely on the ActiveDirectory module some things you just cannot do with the ADSI accelerator. Even beginners can make good use of this.

Knight of the TARDIS: A Review of Una McCormack's Doctor Who Royal Blood

One of the best things I can think of reading is a Doctor Who book--especially during the hiatus between the seasons of this BBC show. However, with things like Amazon and Netflix, my beloved Doctor is close at hand. Still, there are times when I would love to read about our favorite Gallifreyan--especially when it has some medieval elements, like in Una McCormack's Doctor Who: Royal Blood.

The Doctor and Clara land the TARDIS in Varuz--a city on the brink of death. The Duke who 'rules' the land is ready to risk everything in order to save it--in one last battle. However, a holy man (aka the Doctor) and his companion begin to investigate what's hiding under the surface of this city (and the laser swords), Lancelot and the Grail quest begin to pop up on this land, the Doctor begins to seriously investigate the strange properties of the everything on the planet--including a pendant given to Clara, herself! Will the Doctor be able to solve the mystery, and stop a war that might destroy the area? And, is the energy behind the scenes have ties to the glamour the Doctor has been investigating?

Una McCormack does an awesome job of taking Capaldi's Doctor from the screen and translating him to the page. It is a flawless transition--I particularly loved the parts where our known world became part of the world IN Varuz. I also really enjoyed the Arthurian touches to the novel--they were perfect for moving the story along.

The Doctor just keeps getting better and better in my opinion--I really like reading this series, and cannot wait to finish the next in the Glamour Chronicles series--I think I have missed one of the books. The worlds that he is placed in allow him the opportunity to continue on his quest to learn more and more about humanity (via interacting with his companion), as well as the rest of the vast galaxies he interacts with.

I enjoyed this book, and look forward to the next one. Until I get to travel with the Doctor again, I will take my leave!

My Review:
City-state Varuz is slowly crumbling, with the enemy surrounding them on all sides. Duke Aurelian feels like a failure, believing the only possible answer is to go to war. So when a holy man, The Doctor, arrives he asks for his blessing on his plans, but what the Doctor says blows him away.

Clara finds herself in an awkward situation in the Varuz kingdom. The duchess and the dukes trusted knight wish for her to speak with the coming ambassador, secretly behind the dukes back. Clara believes the duke will have her head, but the Doctor agrees with the duchess plans. What choice does she really have?

With knights claiming to be looking for the Holy Grail and the enemies ambassador shaking in his boots, what is really going on?

Royal Blood is an epic novel in the Doctor Who series. I love both the history of knights and the Doctor Who series, so this book was perfect for me. This book was an amazing read and perfect for any Whovian. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series.

I’m massively overdue on reviewing this one. Oops. Have no fear though, I did reread it, so I’m not just trying to remember from months ago.

Royal Blood, by Una McCormack, is the first book in the Glamour Chronicles. When I was first ordering review copies they hadn’t published any sort of order for the three books, so I ended up reading this one last. Oopsie. It didn’t make a huge difference though. Sure it would have made a little more sense if I’d read them in the proper order, but I figured out pretty quickly what was going on in the other books anyway.

In Royal Blood the Doctor has promised to take Clara to some place that’s quasi-mediaeval. At first it seems like they ended up in the wrong place, but we all know how the Tardis likes to make sure they end up exactly where they are needed! They landed a bit of walk from the town, and when they get there they see a mix of a crumbling city, a palace complete with swords, and... electric lights. Oh and did I mention the swords are laser swords?! Then a bunch of knights show up looking for the holy grail, and things just get weirder from there.

There were a lot of different elements in this book; there is conflict between two different countries, conflict within the court that the Doctor and Clara originally visit, secrets, and the Doctor and Clara are far from the only aliens to show up and complicate things. There was a lot to keep your interest in this book, and they do weave all the pieces together in mostly a coherent fashion. The key word there being, “mostly.” It felt like the author was rushed, and didn’t really take (or perhaps have) the time to flesh out all of the various pieces and then smooth out the rough edges.

I’m giving this story 3 stars. I liked it, but it wasn’t fantastic.
