Must buy for any baseball coach

Ron Polk breaks the game of baseball down not only position by position, but all aspects of the game off the field. A veteran college coach and one of the most respected men in the game, Polk gives excellent tips for coaches of all levels, from the first day of practice to the final game of the postseason tournament. The former Mississippi State coach is still a popular speaker on the clinic tour and after reading the book, one will understand why. Not only does Polk discuss teaching fundamentals and game strategies, but also gives excellent ideas and points on the "behind-the-scenes" aspects of the game - everything from organizing tournaments and field maintainence to dealing with the local officiating associations, fans, and bringing in support staff to help run a smooth program. Polk even includes ready-to-copy charts and forms for player information, public address announcers, game schedules, equipment managing, and setting up and enforcing team policies. If you're looking for big-names and shiny pictures, forget it - this book is for serious coaches....and Polk doesn't leave any aspect of coaching in an organized baseball league uncovered.

Great Book for Baseball Players

This book has helped me so much. With me currently being a baseball player, I need a little more help to push me over the edge to make my high school team. This book has helped me in batting and outfield. Of course, those are the things I do. This book has anything and everything for all postions. It even has a section where it tells you where all fielders are supposed to move in every kind of situation. You name it and it has it. This book however, is not only for players. This is for coaches and believe it or not, it is also for people in charge of the fields! This book has a detailed picture of a field and how you're supposed to water it and stuff like that. So if you would like to get a few pointers, I guarantee this book will help you for however you are involved in the wonderful game of baseball.

About the Author
Jonathan S. Abramowitz, PhD, is Professor and Associate Chair of Psychology, Research Professor of Psychiatry, and Director of the Anxiety and Stress Disorders Clinic at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Abramowitz founded and directed the OCD and Anxiety Disorders Program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. An award-winning researcher, he serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Foundation and is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders. He lives in Chapel Hill with his wife and two daughters.

My thoughts on the ocd spectrum test in the first few pages.

I have been going to a psychiatrist since 2007. I am 28. I have been diagnosed with ocd and I am still on meds. I've tried various self-help stuff. My last effort was completing the attacking anxiety program from the Midwest center. I am in talk therapy now, but that is only vaguely helpful. Whether you think you have ocd or ocpd, use this book. As it later states, everyone has scary thoughts. OCD is just extreme anxiety. Everyone could benefit from this book I am sure. I made it to step eight before starting over, because I did too much exposure at once, producing an awful backslide. Now I'm back on the horse. I restarted this book. I read ten minutes each day and make notes. I periodically review the notes for each day. It sucks having to face my fears, but I love the freedom. My doctor is great, but this book grounds me in reality in between the visits. Getting over anxiety and depression is hit and miss, trial and error. It is a life-long process. But stress is necessary for survival. If you keep trying, one should succeed. Even if you have doubts, do something. One percent of happiness is better than doing nothing at all. The book also says to have faith and learn to deal with uncertainty. I'm not religious or spiritual, but I have faith that nature will guide me through this.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've some rituals to do, for tomorrow is a new day, full of opportunities for gradual exposure and a lot of discomfort. :) Best of luck to you all.

Absolute Best Workbook for OCD

This workbook is the best and I've read them all. What makes this workbook stand out is its comprehensiveness. It covers every type of OCD symptom and has a individualized plan for each type. This is one is different because it covers your thought processes (cognitive therapy) before you even get into the behavior therapy (CBT) which is at the heart of recovery.

I've had OCD for over twenty years and this workbook has helped me tremendously. I recommend it highly whether you go it alone or with a therapist.

A solid introductory read

As someone with a family member who suffers from OCD behavior, this book has been very helpful. I bought two books for him to read and give some consideration to, this and the OCD workbook, and it helped him evaluate where he as it relates to some of his thoughts and behaviors. Sometimes an awakening comes in a moment in real life, sometimes it comes by way of a loving family member, and sometimes it from something in a book which strikes a chord. I think he found both books helpful.

THE NEW YORK CENTRAL's 20th CENTURY LIMITED

Lucius Beebe (1902-1966) was a unique character. The scion of a prosperous Boston family, he also belonged to the elite group of persons who were expelled from both Harvard and Yale. Early in his career as a writer, he published a book of poetry. But he became known as a society columnist, and was known for his fascination with high society, exclusive clubs, good food and drink, and extravagant apparel. He would seem the least likely person to develop a passion about railroads, especially archaic, single-engine short lines and Colorado narrow gauge roads. But he not only developed such a passion; he became the chief practitioner--almost the originator--of the railroad photograph book. Over a quarter century, he published roughly 20 such books, which often featured photographs he had taken himself--although it takes an effort to picture this Boston aristocrat standing in the mud beside the track waiting to photograph the passing of a local freight.

It is perhaps curious that it was not until 1962 that Beebe published this book about the New York Central's 20th Century Limited--the train that he considered the greatest train in the world. The 20th Century, an all-bedroom express train, ran overnight between New York City and Chicago, and was patronized by the elites of society, high finance, literature, and entertainment. Beebe himself was a frequent passenger on the 20th Century, where he continued his customary life style. He described one trip (presumably not the only one) on which he "slept the sleep of the unjust, awash with Hennessy three star and Upmann Coronas."

Beebe strongly preferred the pre-1938 20th Century: "The finely maintained dark green steel cars, the incredibly sleek and purposeful Hudson type engines, the cut flowers in public apartments and the beautiful table linen spoke of security and the best of everything in a well ordered world in which extra fare people got extra fare dividends of service, civility and swift assurance of transport." He observed that "the d�cor of substantial respectability was matched by a clientele of assured substance which traveled in an atmosphere of decorous propriety." In Beebe's eyes, things began to go downhill in 1938, when the 20th Century adopted steam engines and cars streamlined in an art-deco fashion by Henry Dreyfuss, and switched from open-platform observation cars to closed streamlined observation cars. For Beebe, things got even worse with the advent of diesels, which though "utilitarian and economical beyond all their predecessors," were "without style, distinction or claim to aesthetic attention."

Like his other books, the 20th Century (181 pages) devotes most of its space to black and white photographs (there are two color paintings). But these are accompanied by much substantive text describing the history, equipment, operation and personalities associated with the train. There are chapters about early (1890s) rail travel between New York and Chicago, the origin and history of the 20th Century (and the Pennsylvania Railroad's Broadway Limited, the 20th Century's principal rival), dining on the 20th Century, the New England section that brought passengers from Boston and connected with the 20th Century in Albany, and some of the wealthy passengers who rode the 20th Century.

The book is profusely illustrated with 60+ years of photographs of engines, cars, trains, stations, including interior shots of on-train bedroom facilities, barber shops, dining cars, kitchens, lounge cars, train crews and famous passengers. Even train wrecks and derailments. The selection of images reflects Beebe's preference for the early days. (When warned that the 1948 election might set the country back 50 years, Beebe is supposed to have responded, "What was wrong with 1898?") There are also facsimiles of advertisements, newspaper articles and train schedules. The appendix includes a table showing how the train's schedule has evolved over the years (from 20 hours in 1902 down to 16 hours by 1938), and another table that provides such technical information about 1896-1931 engines as their dates of construction, costs, weights, and tractive efforts.

Not a bad read at all!

To begin w/, let me preface this that I am a Brock fan. Still, I came in w/ an open mind about the whole book.

It was an easy read. I liked that chapters were short. It allowed me to read a chapter or so during porcelain god sessions w/o having to leave in between chapters. So the book went by pretty fast.

That same reason is why I gave the book a 4 instead of 5. I felt that the chapters were actually kind of too short and lacked a lot of details. I felt I wanted more in some of the chapters and left out some details.

Overall, I thought it was a good book. I really didn't really learn too much more of Brock from it.

I didn't know he tried to come back from WWE and they didn't want him. Aside from that, nothing really deep down and secret that I'd want in an autobiography came out.

He does blast a few people in the book. But I look at it as his words and feelings. So I take it. Why not?

If you're a Brock fan, I think it's a good buy. If you're a Brock hater, it's a good buy too. You might hate him more or less. It depends.

Well written and frank snapshot of Lesnar's life so far

I'm not particularly a 'fan' of Brock Lesnar, at least I wasn't before I read his book. Death Clutch gives the reader an insight into the trials and tribulations of a very talented, driven and imperfect youth who develops into a man who learns mostly by instinct and also by making mistakes. I gave the book to my wife to read after I'd finished it so she can see how an energetic, testosterone driven youth makes decisions early in life so she can have a better understanding of how our own boy(s) will develop as they go through the same years in life and are partaking in similar sporting activities. Lesnar also has a strong bond with family values, somewhich which appealed to me personally. A formidable opponent in any arena, not a bad author too!

Decent book

I thought the book was pretty good, I'm a fan of Brock. My only complaint is that it's too short and he has no really good dirt stories. He has maybe 1 good one but he says in the book he really does not remember his WWF days which is strange. He also does not talk about Sable suing WWF. I will say though if I read the book before his return then I would of definitely knew that he was going back to the WWE, and I do know now that he did definitely take a fake fall in the Overeem fight just to go back to WWE. He says time after time in the book he is a business man and he will do whatever it takes to make more money for his family.

No Windows forms?

Stephen Davis, C# Weekend Crash Course (Hungry Minds Press, 2002)
A while back on one of the mailing lists to which I am subscribed, a chap popped up asking about books that cover programming console applications (you know, those things that when you run them, pop up in a command line box instead of running within Windows) in depth. My first reaction was "who on earth would want such a thing?" I still don't really know the answer to that, but if he's reading this, I recommend this book highly to him. Davis' whole book is devoted to console apps and DLLs.
And therein lies its major fault. In a programming world where, let's face it, the GUI has won the day (be it Windows, Xwindows, BeOS, Apple, what have you), a book that doesn't even mention the existence of programming graphical forms is painfully outdated, no matter how recently it was released. (The other C# book I'm reading right now was published the year previously, before Microsoft had even finished the C# visual form designer, and still manages to devote a chapter to Windows forms in C#!) The omission is unforgivable in a book on program design in the twenty-first century, even more so when the books covers Microsoft's .NET technology.
As for the program design itself, there's a decent amount to be learned here if you're trying to pick up C# after knowing another programming language. (As a longtime C++ programmer, I have no idea how total newbies will react; proceed at your own risk.) A few of the sections try to cram far too much into one thirty-minute session, especially towards the end (the Collections session is almost unreadable without a concordance of some sort; thankfully, I happened to be at the same portion of A Programmer's Guide to C# at the time, and it helped me figure things out without too much pain).
Probably worthwhile as an adjunct, but I can't see it being a primary reference guide for any serious programmer. ** �

Not Recommended

A one star rating is an overstatement of the value of this book. I believe the 15 hours is the time the author spent learning the language.
It is not of value to beginning or experienced programmers. It does not serve well as either a review or an introduction. The examples are poorly chosen, (banking account), poorly explained. The other examples are lacking in clarity.
Even when something that one knows well from other languages, such as the difference between ++i and i++ is mentioned - it is a mention without an example in a loop or a clear explanation.
Look elsewhere to get started in C++. 15 hours would be too long to spend with this book. This was my first look at a "Crash Course"...... it looks like a train wreck.
