Should be required reading for agency folk

This book should be required reading for every agency account person. In fact, we made it just that at our agency. Every new account person now gets a copy and genuinely asked to read it. If everyone followed the advice in the book we'd all have a much easier time at work!

A must have for anyone in advertising!

Of all the book on advertising I've read, this is by far my top pick. It's an easy read and extremely insightful. I started my career as an advertising recruiter and this book helped inspire me to make my move into an agency. The chapters are very well laid out, interspersed with humorous anecdotes and personal examples.

I would recommend this book to anyone remotely connected to the advertising industry and even those who are not, as its advice transcends the advertising world. For the aspiring advertising professional it will provide a comprehensive introduction to the business side of advertising and I believe even the most seasoned advertising executive would find this a delight to read.

I know I will continue to reference this book throughout the rest of my career. Don't forget to check out the reading list which includes both classics of advertising literature as well as the latest influential books!

On May 19, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay achieved the impossible, becoming the first men to stand on top of Mount Everest. But by May 10, 1996, climbing the 29,000-foot "goddess of the sky" had become almost routine; commercial expeditions now littered Everest's flanks. Accepting an assignment from Outside magazine to investigate whether it was safe for wealthy amateur climbers to tackle the mountain, Krakauer (Into the Wild, LJ 11/15/95) joined an expedition guided by New Zealander Rob Hall. But Krakauer got more than he bargained for when on summit day a blinding snowstorm caught four groups on the mountain's peaks. While Krakauer made it back to camp, eight others died, including Scott Fischer and Hall, two of the world's best mountaineers. Devastated by the disaster, Krakauer has written this compelling and harrowing account (expanded from his Outside article) as a cathartic act, hoping it "might purge Everest from [his] life." But after finishing this raw, emotionally intense book, readers will be haunted, as Krakauer was, by the tragedy. Highly recommended.

Gripping details of the horrifying and unimaginable events that unfolded on that fateful day.

Ever since I watched the movie "Everest," I have been spellbound by the tragic events of that fateful day, May 10, 1996, and the circumstances that lead to the disaster. I wanted to know more, to learn about the lives of those who perished, and survived, and try to understand why. I sought out books, starting with this one; but also happened upon a series on the Discovery Channel entitled "Everest - Beyond the Limit," episodes of expedition led by team leaders who guide paying clients to the top via the north as well as the south climbing routes. It was quite fascinating witness the harrows of the ascent with the ultimate goal of the summit assault. The shows brought to life for me all of events I was reading about while providing insights to the treacherous terrains, precipitous slopes, plunging temperatures and staggering heights of an actual climb to a place perched atop a death-defying, jetliner cruising altitude of 29,028 feet!

Told in gripping detail of the horrifying and unimaginable events that unfolded on that day, climber/journalist Jon Krakauer on assignment for "Outside" magazine, begins his account in the days leading up May 10. Krakauer introduces us to the climbers, the sherpas and team leaders of his own expedition as well as other competing companies all vying to guide their clients, many of whom paid up to $65,000, to the rooftop of the world!

From there, with fascinating anecdotes of the author's own experiences, Krakauer guides us on his own personal journey--his physical challenges and struggles as well as the emotional suffering of the climb, the deaths, the survival and the flashbacks that continue to haunt him to this day.

As with all personal accounts, there's always another side to the story and "Into Thin Air" is no exception. At the end of the book in postscript, the author includes notes about literary attacks, many of which he defends successfully; and sorrowful, some quite angry, responses from members of the families of those who lost their lives. I can't imagine what Krakauer must have lived through and his continuing nightmare about that disastrous day more than 20 years ago.

A must read for those interested in attempts to summit Everest and to bear witness to the perseverance, sacrifice and steadfast determination that possesses intrepid explorers and drives them to stand on top of the world. Remember, reaching the summit is only half the journey and 80% of the Everest fatalities occur on the way back down.

Great book---but why not a single pic of any of the heroic SHERPAS?!

Pretty good account from one of my favorite genres: True-life survival biography.
I found the book compelling from the get-go, and downright gripping at times. He did a good job of piecing together where the various actors were on the mountain at pivotal moments of the final ascent and descent to and from the summit.
My only beef: Could've benefited from more photos, e.g. Some of the other major characters in the story (The rich, deletente, Sandy Pittman; The guides and clients of the expedition; the members of the other expeditions [the Taiwanese team, the South Africans]...and especially THE SHERPAS! Why no photos of the SHERPAS?).

Gasping for air

I have only read the Kindle version and now understand there are some differences between it and the original text. Whether anything of significance has been omitted, I don't know, but to me what I read is great. Why anyone would do what Krakauer, Boukreev, Hall, and so many others did, voluntarily risking their lives, mystifies a couch potato like me, but they all have my deepest respect for their skill and courage. So I am only in a position to judge Krakauer's storytelling; everyone made mistakes on that day, and his book does not leave me with a lesser opinion of any of the climbers. The story kept my rapt attention from beginning to end, every word, every name he credited, his postscript, and the criticisms by Boukreev, DeWalt, and others. At no point did Krakauer seem as though he were deflecting blame away from himself.

I've never climbed a mountain, yet at times Krakauer had me gasping for air.

Urging that we support other forms of transit, the author offers a plan for redesigning the world's transportation systems--and the layouts of cities and suburbs--to encourage reliance on buses, trains, trams and nonmotorized transport. Other proposed solutions include developing automobiles less damaging to the environment and raising consciousness on this issue through education. While Zuckerman's brief is compelling and many of his suggestions worthy, his call for national and even global social reorganization requires considerably more government intervention than seems plausible. Zuckerman, a Paris-based consultant, writes in an engaging and soothing style and has gathered some prodigious research to bolster his twin theses that the automobile is a fundamental cause of environmental, social, and economic difficulties and that comprehensive change is the only responsible solution. With well-documented chapters on everything from speed bumps to hitchhiking to the 100-mile-per-gallon carburetor, this book is an excellent compendium of heretofore unheard-of and hard-to-find examples, good and bad, of our relationship with the car. Although the author advocates a global effort to deal with the car crisis, the book contains plenty of good advice for small steps as well. Excellent for policymakers, planners, and strategists, but accessible to literate readers of all stripes.

This text started with a simple premise: as instructors, we need to teach relevant microchip technology to students and employees in semiconductor manufacturing. Unfortunately, in the semiconductor industry, changes in technology are measured in months, not years. Our challenge was to write a relevant book that would not be outdated by the time it was published. With that in mind, we researched the material and applied ourselves to writing the chapters and creating the artwork. Following the aggressive pace of Moore's law, the technical material in our book is at most only 18 to 24 months old. This permits us to keep abreast of the changing technology nodes swirling through the semiconductor industry.

This text is written for students in two-year and four-year technology programs at community colleges and universities. The text will also be a practical reference as well as a standard text in corporate and technical training classes. Students are expected to have an understanding of high school chemistry, physics, and math. Chapters are organized around the broad technologies applicable to semiconductor manufacturing. ORGANIZATION OF THE TEXT

Our goal is to accomplish three objectives:

Help technology students grasp the fundamental technologies used in manufacturing semi conductor devices. Present some of the many challenges in microchip fabrication. Instill in the reader an appreciation of the conceptual simplicity of semiconductor manufacturing.

A good overview

The book is over 400 pages long so of course I haven't finished it. But I started with the chapter that applies to my job. The priciples are the same, but things have changed a bit in 10 years. That said, the book is still very helpful. I hope that one day the authors will update the book, which would be a very time consuming task. I have not found a better book so far. If anyone does, please reply to my review.

Good reference manual for overall fabrication process.

I found the book covered all aspects of semiconductor fabrication in a very satisfactory manner. I was recently involved in a project which covered tools supporting all aspects of the fabrication process and found minimal information available on this subject. Tool vendors hold information close hold on their particular tools. This book provided me information I wish was available when I needed it.

Best of the Breed

This book is current and well arranged. The illustrations are up-to-date in an industry that is as dynamic as current events.
The test questions range from the simple to the complex and provide a good mix for beginning to advanced classes. You will find the PowerPoint lecture series particularly helpful. Previous exposure was Van Zant. I find this text has a better flow and a more logical presentation method. Excellent explanations are provided for such things as copper technology, and current trace-width architecture. Written at the technician/process level with good inputs from both perspectives.

Peter Mansfield (1928–1996) corresponded regularly for the Financial Times, Economist, and London Sunday Times on Middle Eastern affairs. The author and editor of numerous works, he is best known for his comprehensive study The Arabs.

A definitive but digestible history

I had the opportunity to meet Peter Mansfield a few times when I worked in London between 1993 and 1994, a softly-spoken and dignified man who had made it his life's work to learn about and understand the Arab World and its relationship with the colonial powers.
Sadly, Mansfield has since passed away, but this book remains as a beautiful epitaph that is as close to a definitive but digestible history of the Arab people as I've read.
Recommended for those who want to understand the big picture before getting into the detail of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.

Self-Identity and Foreign Views

Mansfield presents a country-by-country survey of all the Arab peoples of the world. Mansfield is a historian and journalist bringing 30 years of field experience to this work.

His analysis helps clarify how various Islamic movements have dealt with the challenges relating to modernization, technology and the modern world political system. As part of this process, he discusses the causes and results of the 1990 Gulf War.

Note that Mansfield is focusing on Arab peoples, not all Islamic peoples of the world. However, in this process, he also includes a perspective on the relationship of the Arab countries and Islamic movements to non-Arab Islamic peoples and sects.

This able author looks at the data in different ways, providing a multi-faceted view. He provides a historical focus, which helps to understand how we got where we are. Filling in many details often missed in the somewhat abstract chronologies we expect, Mansfield includes here an analysis by country.

This brings to life the individual situations that are often ignored when the stock western political analysis refers to the "Arab World." As you read Mansfield's discussion of each country, you realize these are people like everyone else, trying to make sense of the puzzling forces and situations in which they are caught up. Real life rarely matches the simple back and white of political rhetoric and media sound bites.

Extremely insightful is a third view in which Mansfield compares self-views of the various Arab peoples and the view of them by foreigners. Readers will find this book an enriching experience.

Brilliant book

If you're looking for a compact but detailed history and description of the Arab world, it's difficult to imagine a book that can top this one. I picked it off the shelf thinking it would be just another dull chronology - but when I examined its layout, I just had to have it. It consists of three sections: a detailed and highly readable 300-page history of the Arab world; a set of brief chapters on each Arab country; and a final short section on how the Arabs are viewed by both themselves and Westerners.
The ability to pick a single country to read about individually is the aspect of the book that most stands out for me: I was really interested in reading about just five or six Arab countries, and I wasn't about to buy a book on each of them. This book solved the problem brilliantly.

The first edition of this book (1970) set out a systematic basis for the analysis of binary data and in particular for the study of how the probability of 'success' depends on explanatory variables. The first edition has been widely used and the general level and style have been preserved in the second edition, which contains a substantial amount of new material. This amplifies matters dealt with only cryptically in the first edition and includes many more recent developments. In addition the whole material has been reorganized, in particular to put more emphasis on m.aximum likelihood methods.

There are nearly 60 further results and exercises. The main points are illustrated by practical examples, many of them not in the first edition, and some general essential background material is set out in new Appendices.
