unaware or forgetful of best industry practices

As landscape designers we often find ourselves working somewhat in isolation, unaware or forgetful of best industry practices. The Thriving Landscape Designer reconnects us with every aspect of what we love to do, from the psychology of managing clients' expectations, to very practical and useful concepts such as municipal approvals and preparing budgets for your clients. Catherin's inclusion of personal stories and experiences lend the book a human and very readable flow. She is remarkably generous with her vast experience and shares specifics in costs, profitability, and process from initial client meeting, through the design process and installation, to invoicing and reconciliation. The valuable information contained in these pages is often lacking in the curricula of Landscape design programs. It is a must have, not only for those of us just beginning careers in the green industry, but also the established and experienced among us.

Exceptional Book for Landscape Designers of All Levels

This book presents a well-rounded examination of key elements for a successful career in landscape design. It is extremely well organized, and the writing succinct, not verbose. Using pages filled with stories, examples, case studies, graphics, and work site photos Catherine clearly communicates her points. The writing is very much like an engaging “how to” book rather than like a dry business school textbook. Of particular note are the chapters on managing risk and the installation team as they relate to the overall project success.

I am an experienced designer, have been in business for almost 15 years and have worked with the author. Catherine retired at the top of her game, culminating with this book publication. I took Catherine’s Professional Practice Course (from which much of this book seems to have been developed), about mid-way in my career so some of the material was familiar. However my business has evolved and grown since then. I find a great deal in this book to consider and apply to my work going forward and have sticky notes marking several sections which I plan to reference.

This important new book offers an engaging and challenging introduction to the thorny paths of the globalization debate. Beck aims to clarify the ambiguities of the debate, to distinguish between the various types of globalization and to warn the reader of conceptual traps. Most importantly, however, he opens up the horizon for political responses to globalization.

Beck focuses on two main questions: what does globalization mean? and how can it be moulded politically? He begins by examining the ambivalences and paradoxes of globality and globalization, with regard to society, economics, politics, ecology and culture. He sets out the rival perspectives in the globalization debate and assesses the prospects for a transnational state. Central to the book is Beck's argument that a decisive critique of globalism is necessary to make space for the primacy of politics. In the last section, he offers a series of constructive proposals to counter the current paralysis of politics, suggesting ten ways of addressing and answering the challenges of the global age. The book concludes by conjecturing that if our politicians do not respond creatively to the challenge, we will experience what Beck calls 'the Brazilianization of Europe'.

Grade 6-10–In the final volume in the trilogy, the action moves to the next generation. Marak, the goblin king, is dying, and his son, Marak Catspaw, is taking over the throne. Miranda, the human girl whom Marak has raised to be Catspaw's wife, has come to the underground goblin lands eager to start her role as King's Wife. When a new elf leader arrives and offers Catspaw an elven wife, Miranda's destiny disappears. She escapes the goblin kingdom and is captured by the elf leader, Nir. Meanwhile, elven Arianna, Catspaw's new Wife, is deeply unhappy with her underground life. In the end, both girls play a role in choosing a new life for both elves and goblins. Dunkle has created a tightly drawn fantasy with a pair of strong, independent female protagonists striving to find their places in new societies. Taking place 30 years after the events of Close Kin (2004), this satisfying conclusion to the Hollow Kingdom trilogy more closely examines relations between the tough, practical goblins and the sensitive, graceful elves, the two magical races dwelling in Dunkle's Victorian England. As in previous books, a plot rich in cultural misunderstandings swirls forth from the goblins' tradition of intermarrying with elves to bolster faltering bloodlines. Events center on an elf traded to goblin Catspaw as the new King's Bride, and Miranda, a human ward of the goblins who has been seized by the elven lord. The captives heighten tensions that drive the races toward a climactic clash, even as the two displaced women find things to appreciate, and perhaps even love, about their captors. Although the romance, as always, tends to mix strangely with themes of imprisonment and cool reproductive imperatives, the grounding in a fully imagined history, the chaste tenor of on-screen interactions between mates, the inventive role of magic, and the sympathetic portrayals of both societies clear space in readers' minds to accept all aspects of the premise. Followers of the series will revel in this (evidently) final opportunity to lose themselves in Dunkle's distinctive, intriguingly disquieting vision. Jennifer Mattson

Redeeming its predecessors

Book three is likely the best of them all. This draws our adventure of the mysterious Hollow Kingdom to a satisfying close. The author seemed notably more comfortable with herself and the tales and maybe it was that the first two books gave her great practice to make a nearly faultless final adventure.

Following the death of Marak, Catspaw takes his place as king, preparing to marry Miranda, a human girl raised to be Catspaw's wife by Marak himself. But things quickly don't go as planned when elves return to the kingdom and an offer of an elvish bride pushes Catspaw to renig on his promise to Miranda.

Miranda flees the kingdom once she is aware that she's being set aside and all that she was raised to do was for naught. The tales takes a spinning trail through Miranda's plight as she leaves the goblins and finds the elves... or rather the elf lord finds her. Either way, this book certainly redeemed the whole saga with its climatic ending and surprising and pleasant twists.

Had the ending of this book not been so gratifying, it would have suffered a lower score. Readers may find Marak Catspaw and Nir the elf lord too irrational for their own good and that in itself causes much conflict between the two races. What also made this book enjoyable was the underlying hint of racism and prejudices. The elves think the goblins barbaric and vice versa. Both peoples saw themselves as the better race and saw all faults and weaknesses only in their enemy.

Five bright stars for closing the story of the Hollow Kingdom with a bang. Dunkle proved her mettle in this book and she may just find a niche as popular fantasy writer alongside Sharon Shinn and Robin McKinley.

Lacking something...

I love this series, I really do. But the second and the third books of this series, in my mind, have steadily declined. Maybe I was too much involved with Kate and Marak's story to want anything else. But I feel that the writing is less impacting. I haven't read such a good teen fiction fantasy series in a while. In the first book, the story was captivating and it drew you in, and a major plus, the characters didn't say stupid things, and romance and kissing wasn't a deluge in the book to add something interesting. But I just didn't feel that way with the subsequent books. Mind you, this book can stand on it's own, but I've placed the first book on a pedestal.

Not as good as the first two books but...

...still highly enjoyable. Both Miranda and Arianna are well-drawn characters who react quite differently to their new situations. This book gives us more of an insight into the world of the elves than the previous books, but the world of the goblins and humans suffers because of it. Kate, my personal favorite character, is barely in the book at all, Sable is demoted to a plot device, and Emily, who was the focus of the second book, is mentioned in one scene and then disappears completely for the rest of the story. Though this book is a great end to the series and a fine stand-alone volume (Marak Catspaw is great and Seylin is still one of the best characters in the whole trilogy), I would still have liked to have seen more of an attempt to tie the stories together. I would also have liked to have had more of the humans' world also. How many years have passed since Kate and Emily left their family lands? There was less of a sense of time with this story than the previous ones. Still, I really enjoyed the book and I'm sad to see the series over.

About the Author
Giovanni Civardi was born in Milan in 1947. While training to become a sculptor, portrait artist and illustrator at the Free Life-Study School of the Accademia di Brera, he also studied medicine and surgery. For over a decade, he worked as an illustrator, producing commissions for newspapers, magazines and book covers. During frequent trips to France and Denmark, Civardi put on one-man exhibitions of this work and pursued his interest in studying the relationship between medical anatomy and the human form as depicted by the artist. His experience gained from teaching anatomy, life drawing and portraiture in schools and institutions over many years has led to the publication of numerous books in which Civardi's experiences are brought into focus.
