Awesome story just short

I really enjoyed this book, but i did think it was way to short. I did like how it got straight to the point and i mean straight to the point lol. I cant wait to see who Jade picks and how she deals with her shamrock loves.

This story is about a girl who is in college and keeps giving her heart away to the wrong guys who keeps breaking her heart. But when she sleeps with her best friend things take her for a world wind when people from her past come back into play. You have 4 guys trying to win Jades heart but she tells them her heart is strictly off limits.

This short story is an awesomely steamy book. It definitely had me reading till the end! The cliffhanger has been keeping me on my toes waiting to read more on Jade. I can tell her story is going to be one that will be hard to put down. I have already told some friends who are addicted to books like this, that it is going to have you wanting more.

Holy Hotness, I just finished Strictly Off Limits (Jade's College Diaries 0.5) by Crystal D. Spears and I loved it! Yep, a love triangle like no other....Seriously, Jade I love her and her little hussy self! Did I mention she has 4 HOT SEXY guys chasing her and she can't choose just one. So, there's Nate her playboy best friend who she has had a thing for since freshman orientation, but they were never more than friends. Then the twins with their dark skin, jet black hair, and charcoal piercing eyes ***swooning*** over Brayden and Layden ***cough*** Umm I want them both tehehehehe! Oh and did I mention they have tattoos and piercings...Yes, I am a sucker for bad boys! ***sigh*** Last but not least Dean (walk-er on outta there) Walker is the sexy, sweet, charming, playboy that hmmm has a piercing that would make any girl's panties wet! He was a little wordy throughout the story for a college guy, but I have to say I was swooning over him wordy or not.

Are you interested yet? You totally should be this is one HOT story that had me hooked! It's a short novella and this series will be in six installments. It recently received a makeover too with a new title and cover. The new cover is total HOTNESS! Spears did a phenomenal job on this novella! I cannot wait to finish the series. It was well written and kept me engaged throughout the story! I read it in one sitting because she had me hook, line, and sinker! I will definitely be continuing the series and best of all each book is scheduled to be released about a month apart so you don't have to wait long! After reading this series I seriously want to go back to college! Stay tuned for my next review of Strictly Stuck (Jade's College Diaries, Strictly Series #1). difficult but interesting

This book formally describes the type semantics of procedural and functional languages. It is about half dense prose and half math notation. It's not what you would call a popular treatment. As with any book that has very heavy math notation, I found myself reading very slowly. However the material is interesting. Various research results from the early 90s are presented. I think that thoughtful programmers who are interested in compiler technology and/or correctness proofs will enjoy this work.

Review of: Crushing White: The SNIPER!

After some years of chess abstinence, this FIDE Master needs all the help he can get in updating his openings so he doesn't get "caught out" in the latest theory. What Grandmaster Henley does here is continue to weave the net of dynamic Black counter-play based on systems with 1...g6, 2...Bg7 and 3...c5. This first volume focues on White setups involving an early 1.e4 2.d4 or vice versa. This is exactly the type of cohesiveness my openings (especially as Black) lacked in my youth.

As advertised in the title "Crushing White" this book does admittedly have a bias towards achieving results with the Black pieces. Apparently his objective is to show that Black can play strategically sound chess, yet win games in dynamic style. The combination of 64 "Illustrative Games" have plenty of diagrams (over 800) and the "Game Recaps" to really allow you to focus on the key moments.

Worthy of being a pamphlet in it's own right, the "Sniper Manual" provides 30 pages of weapons used by Black players such as - Sniper Investment, Bishop Exchange, Bishop Relocation, Exchange sacrifices, and every piece sacrifice including several stunning Queen sacrifices! In addition, I think he really touches the heart of the typical Sniper middlegame play by showing and guiding us to examples of pawn play - d5 pawn break, e5 pawn break, the e5/d5 pawn duo etc and of course passed pawns.

I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about improving their play. With the combination of the Sniper Weapons Manual and the 64 Illustrative Games,
I think any chess player from USCF 1500 up will significantly improve their understanding of how to win chess games as Black with dynamic counterplay!

Better than I expected !!!

Due to the obligations and responsibilities of full time employment, and family life, it is very difficult for me to find time to keep up with "chess opening theory". However, I love to play chess and am very competitive in everything I do - especially when playing 5 minute or 3 minute chess on the internet.

I tink I may have really found the Holy Grail for my black openings with Grandmaster Henley's - "SNIPER! By building a whole black opening system around the kingside fianchetto, I feel I have a sound position no matter what setup White employs. Henley does a great job of dispelling the myth that only White is allowed to control the opening and win beautiful chess games.

While you do need to learn a few very simple, but important, variations (In the Theory Sections he guides you on which ones to focus on), the main attraction for me was the fact that by learning the "Sniper Manual" I have developed techniques that will - as he calls it - give me "An opening I can play for a lifetime" I am always in familiar territory and the themes are constantly recurring. I feel I'm getting an unfair competitive advantage in blitz games.

From a technical production point of view, I quite like the ease of reading with the figurine notation, highlighted main lines and plenty of diagrams. My only quibble might be from a editing technical point of view as the columns in the table of contents on the left margin are slightly off and there is no index in the back.

However, with 396 pages of top notch content I am willing to accept the trade-off as being well within my favor. In terms of market value, the only other Sniper book I am aware of (Everyman Press) is from 2010 and only 176 pages and more expensive.

I would highly recommend this book for any chess player from Class B (About 1600 USCF) upwards to master level. I can honestly say I'm a skeptic when it comes to most chess books. I've bought more paper weights than truly useful tomes and can say without reservation that this was much better than I expected.

I was looking for a new Black opening system a bit off the beaten track so I bit on GM Henley's Sniper. He seems like a nice enough guy from some of his videos on Youtube. I knew there was a volume 2 in the works. I could see from the "Look Inside" feature that the format wasn't the clearest. I had already done some work on the Accelerated Dragon, but was annoyed by all the anti-Sicilians people throw at you these days. (Karma, I guess, as I have played the Closed Sicilian for a long time.) The Sniper looked like a good way to get around some of those lines. The book has a lot of sales pitch in the first few pages and a very long and hard to follow table of contents. Turns out the table of contents substitutes (poorly) for an index of variations. At the end of the Introduction there is the very revealing "How to Use this book" section, where the author states, "I advise taking the variations you want to employ and store them as games in Chessbase, or other chess Software. As you play new games, win or lose, you should annotate them and store them to build your own personal opening repertoire." I don't mind doing some work checking evaluations and variations with Houdini, but isn't it the author's job to provide a repertoire in an opening manual? It is very difficult to think, "Hey, what does Ron recommend against such and such line?" and then look it up in the book. Also, as one reviewer has noted, some critical lines are given, but are well hidden in the body of the work, which is mostly illustrative games between nontitled players.

By it's very nature the kingside fianchetto can transpose to a lot of openings. Doesn't the fact that the author needs 3 volumes to cover the opening belie the claim of "easy to learn?" It's certainly not easy to say what's covered in each volume without an index of variations. Volume 1 examines transposition to Accelerated Dragon Sicilian (1e4 g6 2 d4 Bg7 3 Nf3 c5 4 Nc3 or 4 c4), the dubious Pterodactyl for Black 4 Nc3 Qa5, and looks at the, critical for White, 4 dc. I would recommend picking up Chess Openings for Black, Explained: A Complete Repertoire (Revised and Updated) for more complete coverage of the Accelerated Dragon, which seemed rather skimpy in CW:TS. OK, I'm a sucker, I admit I shelled out another $22 for volume 2 (wherein we learn there is a third volume in the works.) See my next review there.

Too great a misunderstanding

The author has some talent but the preponderance of mistakes and misunderstanding is too great for me to ignore. This book is best classified as juvenilia. Where or how it fits into ongoing discussions of feminism, antifeminism, pro porn and antiporn, gender relationships and identity, etc., I leave it to you to decide if you read this book.

Should you read this book? I think you can find interest and/or pleasure in reading it, as long as you are aware of a few problems.

Despite the number of times these stories have been edited, revised, and published there is at least one area that may harm the innocent or underinformed reader. Safe sex is lifesaving. In several stories, condoms appear and disappear in the same scene progression -- and of course the heroines sometimes scream for the male to achieve orgasm inside the female. The author simply forgets, through many iterations of publishing, that sex was safe in one paragraph and then unsafe in the next. Second, there are sexual positions or acts that absolutely require artificial lubricant -- no one from porn star to virgin doesn't require lubricant. If, as a few characters do in the stories --and I'm tempted to say all of them, but I may have lost count -- you attempt this act without plenty of lubricant, patience and communication, you will, not might, you WILL cause all sorts of bodily injury.

This is a book of fiction. Due to the frequent mistakes and misinformation, I am tempted to say that this is not an autobiographical account in the strictest sense. Do not try the depicted acts at home, not without a lot of supplemental sex education.

A parting thought or two from someone who is sympathetic to the need for a great deal more discussion about gender relationships with regard to sexual experiences. The author portrays many variations on the basic human dilemma of sex, all without stridently -- or otherwise -- claiming one or the other gender is at fault. Refusing to read this book completely and fairly may provide grist for your personal ideological windmill, but you do the author a great injustice ignoring her sometimes nuanced thought.

The biggest misconception about sex, and especially about gender identity and stereotypes, is that all people need to do 99.9 percent of the time is simply show up and sex will be either satisfying or not depending on irrelevant factors such as gender, experience, attitudes, enthusiasm, etc etc. Without working at communicating with one another, and being both honest and nonjudgmental, you might as well have stayed home, alone. Quantity of sexual experiences will not fill the void of dissatisfaction. Thinking you need a lot of sexual partners or even a great deal of sex within a day or week or whatever, is more to do with performance anxiety -- yes, among women too, all of you who like this author are extremely passive during sex, no matter how often she might initiate the process or scream or act aggressively.

Keep these things in mind as you read this very flawed but still interesting book. How might the characters or the author have been better off with a little reciprocity, giving as well as taking, kindness and generosity and respect for another -- and what the limitless potential might be if you worked as hard at reciprocating pleasure than merely showing up for someone else to slave away for your ideas about pleasure.

Rising Above Genre (for the most part)

In Little Cat, Tamara Faith Berger attempts, with a great deal of success, to take the genre of pornographic writing and blend or elevate it with elements of literary fiction.

When the two novellas in this collection (Lie With Me, and The Way of the Whore) are the most successful is not when the prose exhibits the pure mannerisms of pornography. Rather, it is when Berger takes the vast, strange, twisted and grand topic of human female sexuality and twists our view of it on its head, creating new angles, giving the reader fresh viewpoints and unusual, disturbing vistas of this all too human pursuit we think we know so well.

That is when these two book rises above the confines, demands and expectation of the genre. We get more than titillation. We get a writer exploring one of the most common of human pursuits in novel, odd, exciting ways.

The standard, but maybe not the best

McQuarrie's book is typically the standard text in many undergraduate and graduate programs, but I believe there are many other resources to learn statistical mechanics in a much clearer way.
I find the following things to be particularly annoying about the book:
1) The typesetting! The pages are very difficult to read, especially equations. It's a very old typeface and my eyes literally hurt after reading McQuarrie for too long.
2) Very few problems are worked out. Many important concepts that should involve more detailed discussion are simply left as exercises to the student. I believe that more peripheral results and extensions of fundamental material are better left as problems, as opposed to fundamental results.
3) The glaring absense of good discussion on spin systems (such as Ising magnets) and critical phenomena. These are VERY important topics in modern statistical mechanics.
I would recommend the following if you want to find good books on statistical mechanics:
1) If you want one comprehensive volume, use Linda Reichl's book.
2) If you are only interested in statistical thermodynamics, use David Chandler's book.
3) If you want both statistical thermodynamics and nonequatilibrium statistical mechanics, use Chandler and Robert Zwanzig's book.
Also, Kubo's statistical thermodynamics book is really good.
I really would not recommend McQuarrie. Save your eyes and get a more modern book with at least a better typesetting.

Classical textbook.

I have found this book to be an excellent resource during my PhD and postdoctoral studies in molecular simulations. It is concise, rigorous and spans the classic problems in statistical mechanics more thoroughly than any other text. The development of the central axioms and theorems and connection with macroscopic thermodynamics is quite enlightening.
I have studied the sections on: foundations, perfect gases, imperfect gases, crystals and liquids. The book also covers kinetic theory, reactions and more.
The book is necessarily concise and therefore is a bit difficult as a first course. However a diligent graduade student could conceivably "slog" through it and would later come to appreciate the rewards. For a cheaper alternative, turn to the other classic of this field by T. L. Hill.

Maybe good for a reference, but not the best first source

I am a engineering/physics student, and I used this book for a first year graduate course in statistical mechanics. The book contains a lot of information, and the chapters are extremely concise. In this, lies both the strengths and weaknesses of the book. I think that the short, too the point writing style makes this book an excellent reference. However, the relatively small amount of exposition made it hard to learn material for the first time from the book. Overall, I would not suggest this book as a first introduction to the subject. But i think that it could be a usefull reference for someone with some background in the subject.

A Real Eye Opener

This is a great book. It offers a good reality check, critiquing psychiatric violence in its many forms. It serves as a great eye-opener for all professionals working in 'mental health'. This should be mandatory reading for all working within psychiatry and for students in medical schools and allied professions. Although the book is written by all Canadian contributers, I think the many issues in each chapter can be applied anywhere in the global world where the bio-medical model is dominant. One of its major highlights is that it provides knowledge (and narratives) from a variety of sources, including academics, professionals, family members and people who have been harmed by psychiatry, which makes the critiques well rounded and balanced based on a variety of positionings and experiences.

This book will stick with me for a long time.

Good to have a textbook on a fairly niche and evolving discipline. A "global" mad studies version would be most welcome.
Pity it was not available electronically as having it shipped to Africa presents many obstacles and extra costs. For this reason, not very budget friendly especially considering the community that would benefit most from the content! I wanted more on intersectionality, neurodiversity, contemporary mad pride activities, occupy mad, the evolving "neuro" taxonomy and global activism. Maybe next edition?

Literally (yes, literally) exploding with delights

Professional pedant Oliver Kamm provides no pedantry in his new book Accidence Will Happen. Indeed, although the author writes a column called "The Pedant" in The Times (of London) on English language usage, he reveals here that the title of his column is meant as a joke. (Don't worry, Americans -- this book covers both American and British English, which Kamm calls two dialects of the same language.)

This book is full of jokes. (Though the author being British, it's humour not humor.) This book is no joke, though, as it discusses some serious English usage conventions and even delves into some grammar. So this book is both informative and helpful. But it's also in good fun -- Kamm has a forgiving spirit. Like to boldly split your infinitives? Have at it, says Kamm. Ignorant of when to use "that" and when "which"? Doesn't matter, says Kamm. Use that which sounds better to you.

Kamm shows the power of language used carefully. One evidence is the title of this book, which comes from a perfectly grammatical and delicious plum of a pun that Kamm's mother Anthea Bell created when she translated the comic book Asterix the Gaul. Though I had not known it (and my spellchecker flags it), accidence is a word, and it means the part of grammar that deals with the inflections of words.

This book, according to Kamm, is intended as "a source of advice and an argument about language." And the book serves as both. Lots of advice and lots of arguments, although the arguments are not argumentative but instead expository and insightful. In fact, the book is split into two parts to address argument and advice. Part 1 covers Kamm's view of English usage, while Part 2 sets out a list of disputed usages. Part 1 is mostly argument, and Part 2 mostly advice.

The argument in Part 1 takes direct aim at strict grammarians. Pedantic people, like H.W. Fowler -- original author of Fowler's Modern English Usage, are panned. (Though, in Fowler's case, not completely, as Kamm says he is a reader and fan of Fowler. But only when he's witty, not schoolmarmish.) Sensible souls with style, like Steven Pinker -- author of The Sense of Style, are praised. (And it is thus no accident that Steven Pinker provided a blurb for the front cover and a longer blurb for the book's front pages.)

There's lots of advice in Part 2 that will set language mavens' heads exploding. Literally exploding. Because this book says it's fine to use "literally" as an intensifier rather than to mean "literal meaning." And there's no grammar rule broken by a supermarket saying "ten items or less" for its express checkout lane. Hopefully, people will feel more comfortable using the words they feel most comfortable using. (Like "hopefully".)

That's the message of this book. Even if you think you do not know English grammar, if you are a native speaker of English, you do know grammar. We all mastered many complex grammatical constructions as we mastered the English language. So we should stop worrying so much about pendants and their pedantry and continue to speak and write how we think is correct. That is how English remains vibrant and growing.

Still, pay attention to style and convention. Those are important. But worry most about what you can do with language, using usage and style conventions to make your points clear, powerful and persuasive (while not sounding stupid, of course). Not about grammar nits that may be prohibited by prickly and pious pedants.

"Above all," Oliver Kamm says, "language is interesting. Pedantry isn't." His book proves that.

Wonderful book but use with caution

This is probably the only grammar book that will make you chuckle and for that reason alone it’s well worth reading. This book advances an argument about the English language well worth reading. Briefly it is this: English, the world’s lingua franca, is very much a living language. As such it is forever evolving and there is no “wrong” English language; put simply English is what we say it is. English is English usage. The very idea of improper English arose not to promote clear communication but to preserve the social class of the bourgeoisie. And in that cause, the grammarians have attempted to impose their ridiculous rules of grammar on the classic writers of the English language including Shakespeare, Milton, Austen, and the Bible. (This is not an exhaustive list.) If we truly aim to be clear then we need to narrow, not expand, the gap between the spoken and written English. And that is what Kamm advocates. That we write, as much as we can, the way we would speak; that “we find our voice."

I agree with much of this argument. I think that the best way to learn a language is to read the classics. (But then I am biased as the classics were my English education.) I also think that when a grammarian spends many, many pages listing rules showing that his or her English usage is right whereas that of the Bible and George Eliot leaves much to be desired, there is a problem. Not with the Bible; with the pompous grammarian. I agree too that the issues over which the pedants spill so much apoplectic ink are not terribly interesting. The debates over whether it is “appropriate” to use whomever or whoever or whether enormity can only mean something bad as opposed to something huge are not the least bit interesting. And they are not made more interesting when the pedants’ essentially command the hapless reader to go memorize their rules. Kamm is right about all that. But I also think there is a sense in which Oliver Kamm goes too far.

Kamm is a self-confessed former pedant. And like many converts, he is a bit dogmatic about his new faith in a democratic English. For example, he quotes (approvingly) Emma Thompson’s injunction against using “innit” because “it makes you sound stupid.” His point is that innit is idiomatic English but that this idiom, if used in a statement of qualifications for example, is unlikely to impress a potential employer. It is, as Oliver Kamm would say, a question of register.

But that means that the rules of Standard English (those boring rules expounded by those boring pedants) are worth knowing. For only if you take the time to learn (and by learn, I mean memorize) the difference between the transitive and intransitive verb will you be able to look up (in a dull grammar book, likely written by a pedant) whether or not a particular verb takes an object. And only then will you always be able to write an essay in the appropriate register.

Kamm himself gives an example of why this is necessary. He describes an instance of when he first started his working career with the Bank of England and was tasked with analyzing a thorny issue. He labored over the analysis which was sent to upper management. Upper management returned the analysis with a comment on a hanging modifier. Now, Oliver Kamm’s tells this story as a way of lampooning the pedants of this world. But when I read this anecdote I nodded in recognition.

You see, I work in a large corporation and am frequently tasked with providing upper management with analyses of many a thorny issue. And my analyses will not go anywhere if there is a hanging modifier. In my case, when I am at work, the proper register is the pedant’s register. If I don’t know the rules (whether these rules are nothing more than superstitions or not), I can’t do my job. It’s as simple as that.

When I write for my blog, however, my writing changes. There I am mostly concerned with clarity. And not just with any kind of clarity; I am concerned with writing in a way that accurately portray the kind of person I am (so I want to write in my own, not a bureaucratic voice) and I want to write in a way that will hopefully draw the reader in. So when I write a blog post I naturally follow Oliver Kamm’s advice and try, to the extent possible, to narrow the distance between spoken and written English.

As a result, my prose in my blog is far clearer (IMO) than my prose at work. Kamm is absolutely right about that. And if you read his book for advice on how to make your prose clearer, then it is absolutely sound advice.

But remember: how you write (and whether you should follow Kamm’s advice) will very much depend on your audience.

A good book about how English should be: not a book about how it is.

A fun read and informative throughout but more philosophical than educational. The author is opposed to pedantry, and he has a point. Sadly in the UK one is still judged by how one uses English and there are undoubtedly employers and others in positions of importance who will quibble about the difference between "uninterested" and "disinterested".The powerful are right, even when wrong and their views carry more weight than those of the majority: undemocratic but true. Further, many exams actually test knowledge of what I would call more conventional English and as such this is not a book for exam takers.
