Descendants of indentured laborers brought from India to the Caribbean between 1845 and 1917 comprise more than forty percent of Trinidad’s population today. While many Indo-Trinidadians identify themselves as Indian, what “Indian” signifies—about nationalism, gender, culture, caste, race, and religion—in the Caribbean is different from what it means on the subcontinent. Yet the ways that “Indianness” is conceived of and performed in India and in Trinidad have historically been, and remain, intimately related. Offering an innovative analysis of how ideas of Indian identity negotiated within the Indian diaspora in Trinidad affect cultural identities “back home,” Tejaswini Niranjana models a necessary project: comparative research across the global South, scholarship that decenters the “first world” West as the referent against which postcolonial subjects understand themselves and are understood by others.

Niranjana draws on nineteenth-century travel narratives, anthropological and historical studies of Trinidad, Hindi film music, and the lyrics, performance, and reception of chutney-soca and calypso songs to argue that perceptions of Indian female sexuality in Trinidad have long been central to the formation and disruption of dominant narratives of nationhood, modernity, and normative sexuality in India. She illuminates debates in India about “the woman question” as they played out in the early-twentieth-century campaign against indentured servitude in the tropics. In so doing, she reveals India’s disavowal of the indentured woman—viewed as morally depraved by her forced labor in Trinidad—as central to its own anticolonial struggle. Turning to the present, Niranjana looks to Trinidad’s most dynamic site of cultural negotiation: popular music. She describes how contested ideas of Indian femininity are staged by contemporary Trinidadian musicians—male and female, of both Indian and African descent—in genres ranging from new hybrids like chutney-soca to the older but still vibrant music of Afro-Caribbean calypso.

The Egyptians mesmerized the ancient Greeks for scores of years. The Greek literature and art of the classical period are especially thick with representations of Egypt and Egyptians. Yet despite numerous firsthand contacts with Egypt, Greek writers constructed their own Egypt, one that differed in significant ways from actual Egyptian history, society, and culture. Informed by recent work on orientalism and colonialism, this book unravels the significance of these misrepresentations of Egypt in the Greek cultural imagination in the fifth and fourth centuries B.C.E.

Looking in particular at issues of identity, otherness, and cultural anxiety, Phiroze Vasunia shows how Greek authors constructed an image of Egypt that reflected their own attitudes and prejudices about Greece itself. He focuses his discussion on Aeschylus Suppliants; Book 2 of Herodotus; Euripides' Helen; Plato's Phaedrus, Timaeus, and Critias; and Isocrates' Busiris. Reconstructing the history of the bias that informed these writings, Vasunia shows that Egypt in these works was shaped in relation to Greek institutions, values, and ideas on such subjects as gender and sexuality, death, writing, and political and ethnic identity. This study traces the tendentiousness of Greek representations by introducing comparative Egyptian material, thus interrogating the Greek texts and authors from a cross-cultural perspective. A final chapter also considers the invasion of Egypt by Alexander the Great and shows how he exploited and revised the discursive tradition in his conquest of the country.

Firmly and knowledgeably rooted in classical studies and the ancient sources, this study takes a broad look at the issue of cross-cultural exchange in antiquity by framing it within the perspective of contemporary cultural studies. In addition, this provocative and original work shows how Greek writers made possible literary Europe's most persistent and adaptable obsession: the barbarian.

Excellent

Excellent book if you like electronics and are familiar with freqeucny analysis from say a controls perspective. Having dual concentrations in controls and electronics. I found this book to be very useful. Breakdown of problems aren't really present but you'll just have to design things in stages and combine them. You'll see when you get the book. Highly informative for designing analog filters (including multi order active filters) that could be comparable to some low-mid end dsp filters.

Not as good as the original.

The book has lost a lot, since the previous version by Van Valkenburg (this edition was rewritten after his death). Although there is additional material, the book is no longer enjoyable reading. Important entries are entirely missing from the index. The paper used has a fluorescent glow! This causes eyestrain when reading the book.

Good Book

I design filters of frequencies up to 10MHz and I can find every information I need about filters in this book. From the basics to practical considerations such as effects of the op-amp's finite gain on the filters. It also covers Gm-C and switched capacitor filters. Although it says there is matlab but there isn't, but hey! why worry? It's explaination is just as good as Razavi's Design of Analog Integated Circuits. And neither did Razavi have any SPICE, etc. This book is much better written than Continuous-Time Active Filters Design by Deliyannis and the examples are all 'design examples'. Eg: Design a filter with a frequency of...., etc .
This book is possibly the only filters book you'll ever need.

I am a born and bred Geordie (a native of Newcastle) who, as the oldest son of a miner, has managed to drag himself up from humble beginnings. And yet despite this, things have begun to fall apart. On July 8, 1997, I was found guilty of "Road Rage" and sentenced to six months in HMP Durham. This is my story. Our lives are made up of the decisions we make. Some work out fine and some don't; when they don't work out you have to be big enough to make a change otherwise you can spiral away in the depths of despair. Despite what happened to me I have always remained confident that I could turn things around and yet even this confidence can be snatched away from you by events outside of your control as I was about to find out.

About the Author

Ruth Wodak is Distinguished Professor of Discourse Studies at Lancaster University.�Her research interests focus on discourse studies; identity politics; racism, antisemitism and other forms of discrimination; and on ethnographic methods of linguistic field work.

She was awarded the Wittgenstein Prize for Elite Researchers in 1996 and an Honorary Doctorate from University of �rebro in Sweden in 2010. She has held visiting professorships in University of Uppsala, Stanford University, University Minnesota, University of East Anglia, and Georgetown University (Washington, DC). She is a�member of the British Academy of Social Sciences and a member of the Academia Europaea.� In 2008, she was awarded the Kerstin Hesselgren Chair of the Swedish Parliament (at University �rebr�).

Ruth is co-editor of the�SAGE�journal�Discourse & Society, and of the journals Critical Discourse Studies and Journal of Language and Politics. Excellent. For the past 15 years I have bought 2-3 copies per year to give to students on our medical missions to Ecuador or the Dominican Republic. And they have used it, and given me good reviews! This has a very good balance of what's needed on such trips. It's a large-format paperback though, and I wish the newer editions had remained the smaller size of the older ones for traveling purposes.
