A white Huey starts the conversation by asking a pink one, "What's the opposite of the beginning?" When no good answer is forthcoming ("Is it yes?"), the helpful Huey proceeds to introduce more opposites to his friend, such as "up" and "down" and "high" and "low." A cat who runs up a tree (but has difficulty getting back down) becomes a running motif throughout the illustrations. Blue, purple, and orange Hueys soon join the game as well, introducing such pairs as "light" and "heavy" and "happy" and "sad." Some humor is fairly sophisticated, like a Huey who can't tell the difference between a "half full" and "half empty" glass, and another who finds that the "lucky" fan that's washed ashore on his desert island "unluckily" requires an electrical outlet. Throughout, Jeffers uses his characteristic simple shapes and colors, placed amid abundant white space, to evoke humor, frustration, and surprise. As in many of his other picture books, the main text appears in a large serif font, while characters' commentary appears in smaller, cursive-style handwriting. Teaches Concepts with Humor

I've been reading What's the Opposite to my five year old, and she loves it. She gets the humor in Jeffers's books and likes his unique way of teaching concepts. While this book isn't quite as quirky as None the Number, it is still a hit in our house. We've learned opposites like up and down, half full and half empty, and even some less obvious ones like lucky and unlucky. This is a wonderful book if you are looking for books on opposites or good books that teach concepts, especially if you appreciate a humorous twist. I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Very fun!

Love the Hueys! They return and learn about opposites in this cute, funny, and easy to read book. My kids like the simple, colorful pencil-and-watercolor illustrations, and the opposites quite funny. This is a perfect book to read to very young children and my daughter loves to have me read it to her, while she learns about opposites.

About the Author
Ann Ehrlich is an experienced teacher, professional author, and lifelong student. Considered one of the leading experts in the field of medical terminology since 1988, she has written numerous books on such health topics as dental assisting, practice management, speech therapy and lymphedema.

Carol L. Schroeder has been working for more than 15 years to find innovative ways to present medical terminology at a level appropriate for this text's students. Her background in technical writing, translating, and research is invaluable in continuously updating the content and in creating innovative activities and approaches--such as the Simplified Syllabus and Human Touch stories--to enable instructors to present engaging courses that help all students succeed.

Laura Ehrlich, a Registered Nurse in the emergency department at Kaiser's South San Francisco Medical Center, enjoys the fast-paced, challenging environment of the emergency department as well as the knowledge that her skills save lives. She excels at explaining medical terminology to patients and training other nurses on new procedures and technology. Previously, she helped develop and present employee training for the Nursing Education Council at San Leandro Hospital.

Katrina A. Schroeder is a Registered Dietitian who trained and works at Boston Children's Hospital, a Harvard Teaching Hospital. After finishing her dietetic internship at Simmons College, she completed the prestigious LEAH (Leadership Education in Adolescent Health) Fellowship in the adolescent department at Boston Children's Hospital. Currently she is a clinical dietitian in the adolescent clinic there, specializing in the nutritional care of teenagers with eating disorders, obesity, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Katrina also writes guides and blogs for the Center for Young Women's Health and runs a small private practice in Brookline, Mass.

My favorite book of all time!

The Alchemist is a gripping narrative about a young Andalusian shepherd named Santiago and his journey to find the greatest treasure in the world. This charming story follows Santiago on his journey to Egypt, after having a recurring dream of finding treasure there. Santiago travels across great distances and encounters crazy adventures in his quest for gold. Little does he know that the ultimate treasure is actually found deep within.

This dream was so prophetic that Santiago genuinely believed this was his ultimate goal in life. After deciding to travel to a Romani fortune-teller in a nearby town to discover its meaning, a gypsy woman tells him that there is a treasure in the Pyramids in Egypt.

Towards the beginning of his journey, Santiago meets an old king, named Melchizedek, who advises him to sell his sheep in order to travel to Egypt. He also introduces the idea of a Personal Legend, stating that your Personal Legend, “is what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their Personal Legend is.”

The Alchemist Physical CoverAlong the journey, Santiago meets an Englishman who is in search of an Alchemist and together they continue their search for treasure. As they travel through the Sahara desert, Santiago meets and falls in love with a beautiful Arabian woman named Fatima. After a brief period of time, Santiago asks Fatima to marry him, but she tells him that she will only marry him after he finds his treasures. Perplexed by this, Santiago later learns that true love will not stop one’s Personal Legend, and if it does, it is not true love.

Eventually Santiago meets a lone alchemist who teaches him about Personal Legends. He shares his wisdom that people want to find only the treasure of their Personal Legends but not the Personal Legend itself. The alchemist states,

“Those who don’t understand their Personal Legends will fail to comprehend their teachings.”

If you are looking for a book that will inspire courage, this is the one. No matter what your dream, goals or visions are, the universe will conspire to help you achieve the things you want, regardless of how insurmountable the task seems. You must live the life you truly desire to its fullest extent if you want to look back on a life having worth lived.

The essential message is that treasure is more worthy than gold.

Now I see what all the hype was about...

I purchased and began reading this book 2 years ago and, for whatever reason, I couldn't get into it. I found it incredibly dull and tedious and finally gave up halfway through.

A few weeks ago I took my mother to a dental appointment and opened my Kindle to see what I had available while I waited. I decided to give this book another try and started from the beginning, as I couldn't remember anything from what I read previously. I'm not sure what was different this time around, but I was completely engrossed and my 2 hour wait flew by! I continued to read whenever I found a chance and finished it within a few days. I now find myself constantly thinking of the story and relating it to my own life, as well as my friends and family.

It's a short and very simple story, but definitely worth reading!
