Great cross-reference for experienced PHP developers

This book does a great job delivering JavaScript knowledge to the title audience. Throughout the book it compares functionality in Javascript with that of PHP. I found it really helpful in that aspect. I find that, living in the PHP world primarily, I often mess up JavaScript scripting because of what psychologists call the "destructive interference" of my PHP knowledge, where the JavaScript implementation is different than that of PHP. It is really helpful as a reference guide in this respect.

On the downside, I don't see this as a pathway to learn JavaScript - that isn't its goal. In the same tone, it doesn't strike me as a book I would read through cover to cover. Much more useful to dip into when I have a need to look up a specific aspect of how JavaScript differs from PHP.

great book for anyone learning JavaScript (with or without PHP background)

As a hobby I like to look behind the code of websites and code myself. In the past I worked quite a lot with PHP, but not that much with JavaScript (ECMAScript).

The book I will now write about is an excellent book for my personal situation: being already familiar with PHP but not that used to JavaScript at the time I read it, I really enjoyed it. The book does exactly what the title promises: tell you all the in- and outs of JavaScript from a PHP background. The book first starts of with an introduction to the JavaScript language and then gets deeper and deeper by providing you the JavaScript syntax next to the PHP one which you already knew. The book is big enough to learn you the JavaScript, but it is not that big that you feel overwhelmed with it. Most of the book is based about the ECMAScript version 3, but in one of the last chapters you will also find a lot of information about the newer ECMAScript version 5 stuff.

In short: a real good book which I would recommend to everyone learning JavaScript from a PHP background, but also really nice for those who aren't familiar with PHP yet. And the price is decent too. Money well spent, if you buy this one!

This book melted away ALL insecurities and misunderstandings I had with JavaScript by simply leveraging my experience with PHP and showing me the similarities between the two. I had so many "Aha! Now, I get it!" moments with this book that now I'm inspired to use it to teach JavaScript to other PHP Developers in my local community!

Esta trilogia esta buenisima, la recomiendo 100%. No me pude despegar de ella. Es romantica, erotica, tiene suspenso y partes comicas, pero sobre todo lucha por el ser querido sobre todo Sammuel por Elizabeth. Al final Ella tambien lucha por el amor de Sammuel. Amor muy bello y bello final feliz.

About the Author

Hussein Al-Bahadili received his B.Sc degree in Engineering from College of Engineering (University of Baghdad, Iraq) in 1986. He received his M.Sc and PhD degrees in Engineering from Queen Mary College (University of London, UK) in 1988 and 1991, respectively. His field of study was parallel computers. He is currently working as an Associate Professor at Petra University, Jordan. He is a visiting researcher at the Wireless Networks and Communications Centre (WNCC) at the University of Brunel, UK. He is also a visiting researcher at the School of Engineering, University of Surrey, UK. He has published many papers and book chapters in different fields of science and engineering in numerous leading scholarly and practitioner journals, books, and presented at leading world-level scholarly conferences. His research interests include parallel and distributed computing, wireless communications, computer networks, cryptography and network security, data compression, image processing, and artificial intelligence and expert systems.

Vesuvius, Osborne's straightforward text focuses on the life at Pompeii at the time of the volcano's eruption. Discussions of daily activities include mention of the many types of buildings unearthed, such as private homes, bakeries, baths, and markets, as well as the activities enjoyed by the free citizens of Pompeii–concerts, plays, and gladiator fights. A large illustration, flanked on the right by two boxes containing text and a smaller picture, occupies most of each spread. Christensen's distinctive, haunting frescoes are reminiscent of the art found throughout the site. Some illustrations are copies of original artwork, while others offer glimpses into what the city may have looked like prior to the volcano's eruption, detail objects found on location, and offer readers information on dress, decoration, and architecture. The illustrations are framed with decorative patterns typical of the period and the colors used reflect those found at Pompeii, including the distinctive, earthen red of some of its most familiar frescoes. While Osborne's text does not go into great detail, it will serve as an enticing introduction to this legendary city frozen in time. Students ready for more information will be fascinated by James M. Osborne begins by imagining what the Roman city's residents were doing just before Mount Vesuvius' ash buried the city. Later spreads chronicle archaeological discoveries and discuss how scientists form a picture of daily life from the objects, buildings, and artworks recovered from the magnificently preserved site. The theatrical account of the ancient citizens' response to the disaster will bring children right into the history, as will the clear, succinct descriptions of how the people of Pompeii ate, bathed, shopped, and amused themselves. Christensen's unusual frescoes, with their cracked, rough-hewn surfaces and blurred figures in Roman costume, extend the sense of antiquity while making the details of ancient life (and the terror of the event) tangible. In a lovely closing, two images reinforce connections to history by juxtaposing the same street scene, shown first with a Roman Empire mother and child, then with a contemporary mother and son. Great for it's age group. Wonderful details about the city before the disaster as well as what was found in modern times. Gives a nice sense of the people and the culture. Fun to read and fasinating to discuss.

Great book for elementary students

This is a nicely-illustrated (fresco painting style pictures) picture book depicting the history of the town of Pompeii and its destruction via volcanic eruption. The book is large size with pictures each page, medium amount of text, thus appealing and not overwhelming to early elementary students. I used it with a 2nd grader, who was easily able to read it independently. The content was realistic without being overly explicit to those kids who may be sensitive to content regarding death of people and animals. It does not gloss over the fact that many died, but does it considerately, I thought. The whole book is framed by describing the archeological discovery of the town, which helps the children understand it occurred far in the past, and it was real (not just a fictional storybook).

Exetremely useful reference

This is the only book I needed to start my small micro lab. It is complete and easy to follow. This is an excellent choice if you are a veterinarian (especially large animal) and want the basics of culturing, media prep, and diagnostic techniques. A must in every clinic!

Gr 4–8—This museum-style exhibition of world culture goes beyond simply covering the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian worlds by encompassing southern African, Polynesian, and Hopewell cultures. The work begins with a general introduction to archaeology and provides a full-spread time line for reference. An index cites the museum locations of the depicted artifacts. The strength of this work is the gorgeous exhibits, presented in full color on oversize pages. Each exhibit begins with a brief overview of a specific culture. The presentation is less cluttered than that of DK's popular "Eyewitness" series, as most pages contain no more than six items. Readers will discover household articles, such as Pueblo jars, as well as large-scale features, including Roman mosaics. Thorough captions provide context. Wilkinson's illustrations of the various artifacts are photorealistic, with exacting detail. Only a few statuary pieces come off as obvious illustrations. The objects stand out on the pages, the backgrounds set in bold, solid colors. The chapters, called "Galleries," are arranged by continent, and the various exhibitions are further broken down into culture groups. In certain galleries, which focus on precise historical periods, the cultural groups are presented chronologically; in the case of America, the section on the Olmec is followed by the Maya and then the Aztecs. Visit the past in high style!

Wow! What a totally awesome book that is filled with information about historical artifacts from various cultures. This over-sized, coffee table book is designed for older children (and adults too) and the wonderful illustrations and factual material will open up some of the wonders of archeology. The entire family will love paging through this volume...it is like having a museum in your living room. This is an EXCEPTIONAL book and one every school library should have a copy of!

An Antiquities Museum in Book Form - Wonderful Illustrations and a Worldwide Focus ...

“Historium: Welcome to the Museum” is a museum of ancient artifacts in book form. “Curated” by Richard Wilkinson and Jo Nelson, this exquisitely illustrated volume presents an overview of the diversity and beauty of man’s creative efforts. Presented in six galleries, each one representing a specific continent, the text focuses on the artifacts of several countries or regions located in the featured continent.

Following the introduction or “Entrance” and a short article answering the question “What is Archaeology?” a two-page illustration shows a timeline on which artifacts have been chronologically superimposed. This section provides an overview of the content of “Historium” and leads into the more specific “Galleries” (chapters) of the text. Each of the Galleries consists of a brief discussion and a key to the illustrations shown on the facing page, designated as a plate. Individual discussions begin by showing the name of the artifact, the approximate date it was created, and then the brief but informative text.

The illustrations alone make “Historium” a volume that anyone who appreciates artwork will want to add to their personal library. Softly colored pictures have the appearance of hand-drawn pen and ink illustrations that were common in journals during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The drawings are detailed, having depth and dimension. Printed on heavy, ivory or aged ivory-colored pages, the entire volume seems to be a vintage book that one might discover in an attic or antique emporium.

The volume concludes with an subject index, an index of the museums and collections housing the artifacts, a brief overview of the Curators, and finally, image credits as some illustrations were based on photographs.

“Historium” is a beautiful volume that is suitable for display as a coffee table book – it measures approximately 14 7/8” X 10 7/8” – or as a book for anyone, regardless of age, fascinated by history and antiquities. In light of the destruction of many ancient treasures, this is a significant book. It may serve as an introduction to and a means of preserving the memory of those artifacts for future generations. Five stars!

Examining Ancient Cultures Through Artifacts

The HISTORIUM is basically an archaeology book for older elementary - middle school students presented in the form of a "museum book." The book includes pictures and write ups on over 20 different cultures and more than 100 different artifacts. HISTORIUM is a very well developed book, both in presentation and content. However, it is not something every student will enjoy. It makes a great tool for homeschooling as well as a great gift for a student who has a sincere interest in archaeology or social studies.
