This is so far the best book about timber design I have ever come across. Best thing about the book is the plain language, and the amount of examples. Every possible concept about timber design is given by an example which makes it way easier to understand the subject.

Tyranny repeats itself

This book is a description of the habits of dictators over the ages and around the world, written in the form of a how-to guide for a would-be autocrat. (Something like The Prince but taken even further down the road of brazen scheming.)

Some of the play-by-play about power grabs will be (sadly) familiar for anyone who pays attention to international news, but there is plenty of real insight into the habits and eccentricities of dictators. Wood and DeLuca point out, for example, that autocrats tend to associate themselves with deceased national heroes, to the point of actual exhumation of bodies in some cases. There is also a list of crackpot dictatorial ideas that have recurred throughout the decades, such as forced migration and misguided wars.

The material of the book ranges from the grave (such as psychopathic torture methods employed by various dictators) to the humorous (such as advice on picking a nickname: Great Leader and Dear Leader are helpful; The Goat, not).

The Dictator's Handbook is exhaustively footnoted and boasts a bibliography of a stunning 502 works cited, everything from a history of Sparta to very recent news of Hungary's Viktor Orban. BE A DICK! Guide for tyrants and dictators is well-researched, informative, and funny

You just took over your country in a nearly bloodless coup, you've declared martial law, clamped down on the press, "disappeared" your main opposition, but you can't remember what comes next? What's a budding despot to do?

If you are prepared, you'll crack open your well-thumbed copy of THE DICTATOR'S HANDBOOK: A PRACTICAL MANUAL FOR THE ASPIRING TYRANT, by Randall Wood and Carmine DeLuca (Gull Pond Books, 2012), which helped get you this far, and see what comes next.

For starters, cripple the protest movement, advocate a national ideology, and establish a cult of personality -- start by building a few larger-than-life flattering statues and monuments of yourself. Check. Check. Check. Check.

Author Randall Wood was inspired to write this book after spending several decades living and working abroad in Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

"Time and time again," he says, "when the media would report some new political atrocity" in his current host country -- Nicaragua, Benin, Indonesia, Senegal -- "I would mutter, `Well, that's a move straight out of the Dictator's Handbook.' If I said to myself, `Next, the president will insist on constitutional reform,' I was too frequently right."

Only thing is, there was no Dictator's Handbook. So Wood and DeLuca wrote one.

Their handbook, however, was no quickly-spun spoof or skinny gift book. It offers "step-by-step autocracy" and a rich, meticulously-organized, well-researched (there are more than 500 references in the end notes) nonfiction backdrop of history, world politics, and humor.

Not only do the authors use current examples of off-kilter autocrats from today's world stage (I'm looking at you, Daniel!), but they also delve deeply into the history of the potentate--all the way back to the world's first dictator, Roman leader Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus Cunctator. Read this book to learn, laugh, and, of course, to figure out what comes next in your efforts to rule your nation with a velvet-gloved iron fist.

I first met Randy Wood in Granada, Nicaragua, in a cramped hotel room in 1998 where we had our Peace Corps trainee orientation. He and I went on to co-edit the Peace Corps Nicaragua quarterly magazine, �Va Pu�!, and then coauthor the first fully comprehensive guidebooks to traveling and living in Nicaragua, which we wrote and updated for more than 12 years (MOON NICARAGUA and LIVING ABROAD IN NICARAGUA, both Avalon Travel). In short, Randy is a hell of a writer and Dictator's Handbook is a truly impressive project. Get it. Read it. Then get back to work and repress somebody.

It's all here....propaganda tips, which public utilities are best to cut when the populace seems ungrateful, how to keep your pimp hand strong with your harem, selling poppy to the West in exchange for rocket launchers ...I could go on and on. Next to Leonard Maltin's exhaustive movie guide, this is my primary bathroom reading.

The author certainly knew what he’s talking about. It seems ages since I started hunting for articles and other information in the net that would give me an idea of what is good and what isn’t in making money online. I am not into quick money making scams in the net nowadays. A decent, passive income is better than trying that annoying get-rich-fast information spoiling the web. I watched a couple of YouTube videos and found a few blogs here and there, but this book is the ultimate source of information for me to start earning money online. The only downside I found about this book is that the book is very long… to the point of me feeling ‘knowledge overload’. The downside is also the plus factor of this book- it was totally loaded with great insights. Apparently, no one will be able to come up with a large amount of writing such as this, as easy as that. I am totally inspired by reading this. I noticed few sentences that were missed out during the editing process, but it is forgivable. The information here is invaluable and exceeded my expectations. It is totally relevant to what I am looking for. Highly recommended to all work-at- home professionals, including those who are contemplating to make money online as additional source of income.

This is not the sort of book I usually buy, but I am very glad that I did. Alan Woods has written succinct and precise instructions with clear reasoning behind the advice. The reader is left knowing exactly what to do to follow the advice and which steps to take first. Most books in the genre feel padded and repetitive, but say very little, but with this book, it is not the case. I love the use of real language, clear points and an organized and well-planned out format. The book is current and up-to-date with the latest products and services; it also provides links to blogs and sites allowing the reader to feel fully informed. I have actually taken the author’s advice, thanks to the easy instructions within, and it has already proved positive. I will definitely be interested to see more of his work.

Wonderful, easy to understand introduction to creating scent

Nancy Booth has taken what can sometimes seem a confusing hobby, creating your own fragrances, and broken it down into easy to understand language. Her brief description of the history of fragrances was interesting and informative. I also appreciated the list she provides categorizing many popular scents on the market today. The quick and simple quiz included allows you to pinpoint what types of fragrances you or your friends are most drawn to. Her descriptions of the various scent profiles also helped me pinpoint which fragrances would appeal to friends and relatives. In addition to all of this she provides numerous, easy to follow recipes for perfumes and colognes that can be created quite easily at home. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in creating their own fragrances.

Nice recipes, but...

I rated this book a 3 because it wasn't really what I expected. While it was very helpful to have the various scent classifications, the history of perfume and the Q&A test for finding your personal scent categories, this simply took up too much of the book. I guess my problem is that I was looking specifically for a "recipe book," not a page-after-page listing of designer perfumes and what scent category they fall into. Not quite sure why the author devoted so much of the book to this when the book is supposed to be about crafting your own perfumes and scents. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of great information here and it is well presented, it just wasn't really what I had in mind when I bought the book. :)

A Little Treasure

Perfumes, Splashes & Colognes is an education in fragrance. This is a great book for the unschooled reader. The author takes you through many aspects of fragrances, their classifications, the crafting of fine perfume, and the history behind fragrances.
The recipes are informative with a description of the type of scent it will make along with the instructions. Resources for obtaining ingredients are included along with suggestions for storing, and gift giving. I have throughly enjoyed this book.

The Classical Style: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven is a revised and enlarged version of Charles Rosen's landmark 1970 work on the compositions of the trio of musical geniuses who formed the Viennese Classical School and forever changed the face of music. Along with clarifications, expansions, and new insights into the composers and their music, the book has been enriched by the addition of a compact disc containing two of the Beethoven piano sonatas of which the author writes. Rosen's books are always shot through with musical examples, so you'll get a great deal more out of this one if you can read music. The Classical Style is a brilliant book, composed by a genuine artist, sometimes provocative, but never sloppy in its thinking.

The first edition of this book won the 1972 National Book Award and remained available in paperback for more than two decades. For this edition, Rosen adds a 14-page preface answering some of his friendly critics and a 26-page essay on Beethoven?which includes 44 musical examples, not seen?that emphasizes the composer's indebtedness to Haydn and Mozart. Otherwise, the text of the original edition remains unchanged. A CD (not heard) of Rosen playing two Beethoven piano sonatas (opp. 106 and 110) is also included. Insights that will last a lifetime

Rosen's The Classical Style is my favorite book all-time on classical music in general, and Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn in detail. There are other books about these great composers that I love and cherish, but this one is the most intellectually stimulating. It is full of those rare insights that have total impact on my thinking. There are gems in its pages that will enrich your understanding profoundly.

The book is laid out in topics that either address a certain type of piece, a certain period of time and a particular composer. For example, a chapter would be "Haydn before the death of Mozart." Or "Piano concerto". Or "Haydn after the death of Mozart". Or "Piano Trio". Each chapter shows who was best at a certain type of work, why they were the best and then he gives specific musical examples to bolster his arguments. Of course in the process of doing this, Rosen greatly expands your understanding of every topic he covers.

While there are many printed musical examples, it is really better if you are familiar with the pieces in the examples. If you are a proficient music reader, especially on piano, you can probably do pretty well without knowing the music but chances are those two skills aren't mutually exclusive and if you do one, you've probably done the other. In any case, this is a serious book that requires serious work by the reader. You will get out of the book a direct proportion to how much listening and thinking you are willing to do. If you want to seriously learn about the classical period and the elements of music that grew out of that period, this book will help you do that.

If you think that by buying and reading this book you will learn everything there is to know about the classical period, you might be disappointed. How? Well, if you don't know the music from that period and you can't read music, this will leave you seriously lost. In other words, you need some background or you will need to do some serious listening to really get the jewels out of this book. If this sounds elitist to you, you are right. Yet it is done with the purpose of keeping you from wasting your money. So make sure you have some background or are willing to do some work if you expect to get the best this book has to offer.

So, if you have some background in classical music and you want to sharpen your understanding of the period, I think this is easily one of the best books out there for that purpose. The more listening you do, the more you will get out of this great book. Rosen isn't the easiest read but he is brillant and writes like a very brilliant person talks. The sentences are compound and sometimes require you to hold more than one thought for the span of many paragraphs. If you stay with Rosen's prose and read with care though, you will have many "aha" moments and increase your understanding of the elements of the classical period manyfold.

I found this book not only an absorbing read and a top flight textbook, it is a reference book as well. I refer to it from time to time and it solidifies my understanding everytime I visit its pages. It helped me understand Haydn's wit and genius as well as his growth as an artist. It turned me on to his wonderful Piano Trios to go with his great String Quartets and Symphonies. It helped me understand Mozart's gifts in opera and his astonishing String Quintets. It also gave me a much greater understanding and appreciation of his great Piano Concerti, which I already loved to a great degree. Somehow he refreshed my joy in those works and that alone made the book greatly worthwhile. He opened my eyes to Beethoven's originality and rekindled my enjoyment of his music. Most of all, it always enhances my understanding and enjoyment of the musical works being discussed. So many times it has inspired me to fire up the stereo and put actual sounds what I've just read. In the end, satisfaction is greatly increased and you actually feel smarter!

Rosen is a rare intellect who has written strikingly original and highly valuable books on classical music. This particular book is his pinnacle and belongs in the library of any serious student of the classical period, or anyone who appreciates classical music and would like to sharpen their understanding of the finer elements of one of the greatest pinnacles of Western culture.

As Good as they Say

In The Classical Style Charles Rosen does a marvelous job characterizing the music epitomized by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.

Of all the formal principles that have defined any period, the elements of classical style are perhaps most amenable to formal analysis. The classical period is principally characterized by sonata form and tonality. We can agree with Sir Donald Tovey that we do violence to compositions by interpreting them as if sonata form constitutes a set of binding rules rather than a post-facto abstraction of what the masters of the classical period actually did. Nonetheless, the principles of tonality may be expressed with an intellectual clarity which is more elusive when characterizing, say, a canon or polyphonic mass.

This is a reflection of the ideals of the classical period, whose audiences delighted in elegance and structural economy. Classical composers highlighted the structural contours defining works by emphasizing modulation and calling attention sectional boundaries with an intensified emphasis cadence. Elegance of structure was taken by the classical masters as an end in itself, and their harmonies glide on a framework they trace and enact. That is in itself a large part of the game of classical composition.

An understanding of the classical period is not only relatively easy to acquire, but of central importance to understanding nearly all subsequent composition. With the arguable exceptions of minimalism and some wings of the avant garde, nearly every important composition in the Occident since Haydn is either tonal or a reaction against tonality. Tonal harmony is the very foundation of our music theory to this day, and understanding its history and development can open up a deeper understanding of everything from Verdi to Schoenberg to Robert Johnson to Kylie Minogue.

Rosen makes all of this remarkably evident and comprehensible in dazzling prose that astonishes the reader with his insight on every page. I'm not a musicologist and browsed through a lot of the close passage analysis that comprises a big chunk of the book, but I still got my money's worth many times over.

Greatness

This is one of the greatest books ever written. It was my introduction to the structure of classical music, and without it that whole world would have remained opaque to me. I read it first without any music theory at all, but it explains how musical structure works, so I was driven to learn some music theory to keep up. But you need so little that it is hardly a big challenge. Who knew that the basics of music theory were so simple? Then I read it again, and it was twice as good. Then I decided to learn to play an instrument so I could make more sense of it. Then I read it again, and it was twice as good once more. As one other reviewer said, it is a book to read and reread; and it is so clearly written.

His other book "The Romantic Generation" has some very beautiful chapters (the first few especially), but I got bogged down in it -- it gets too technical for mere mortals. But someday I might have another go at it. "The Classical Style" is not like that, a masterpiece of exposition from beginning to end.

Born in Melbourne in 1943, Adrian Feldmann was one of the first Westerners to become a monk in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. On the eve of a three-year, solitary meditation retreat, he recounts the inner and outer journeys that lead him to Nepal where, in the early 1970's, he met two Tibetan lamas, Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. They were among the first lamas to teach Buddhism to Westerners.

In the 1970's, Adrian Feldmann was a young doctor wrapped up in the hippie counter-culture, experimenting with mind-altering drugs and studying Eastern mysticism. Seeking a greater purpose to his life, he began to travel. Following his friends on the hippie trail, he travelled through Afghanistan where he was impressed by the spiritual power of Islam. Inspired by his reading of Taoist philosophy, he and some friends bought a converted rowing boat and sailed down the Indus River, searching for freedom and a more authentic way of living. What he found launched him on the spiritual path to Buddhism.

This personal account of one man's search for happiness is often humorous and sometimes shocking. Adrian Feldmann doesn't shirk revealing the mistakes and failings which help to highlight his personal message of hope. He wants us to know that the ego undermines our happiness and fortifies our habitual, destructive emotions. His spiritual path is a quest to "slay the ego," and his life story is a parable for modern times.

Reads like an adventure story

The book starts out with the monk's travel adventures and love stories which lure you in. You can feel his struggle and desire to know why he has a feeling of dissatisfaction. In writing about his life, you also get a great basic overview of Buddhism. I learned a lot and was inspired by him, his teachers and others in the book.

An Alternative to Xenophon

Since there are so many of these darn things the review shall be divided into three sections. First, a brief description of the Loeb series of books and their advantages/disadvantages. Second shall be my thoughts on the author himself, his accuracy, as well as his style and the style of his translator. This is of course only my opinion and should be treated as such. The final part shall review what this particular book actually covers.

The Loeb series date back to the turn of the last century. They are designed for people with at least some knowledge of Greek or Latin. They are a sort of compromise between a straight English translation and an annotated copy of the original text. On the left page is printed the text in Greek or Latin depending on the language of the writer and on the right side is the text in English. For somebody who knows even a little Greek or Latin these texts are invaluable. You can try to read the text in the original language knowing that you can correct yourself by looking on the next page or you can read the text in translation and check the translation with the original for more detail. While some of the translations are excellent mostly they are merely serviceable since they are designed more as an aid to translation rather than a translation in themselves. Most of them follow the Greek or Latin very closely. These books are also very small, maybe just over a quarter the size of your average hardcover book. This means that you'll need to buy more than just one book to read a complete work. They are also somewhat pricey considering their size. The Loeb Collection is very large but most of the more famous works can be found in better (and cheaper) translations elsewhere. If you want to read a rarer book or read one in the original language then you can't do better than the Loeb Editions.

Diodorus' Library of History takes up twelve volumes in the Loeb series. Diodorus was a Sicilian who wrote a universal history sometime in the first century BC. His work covers both Roman and Greek history and is useful for providing a general Mediterranean view of classical history. Diodorus' work is generally derided for its use of myth and for shamelessly reproducing exactly what was printed in his sources. The first part however is where we get much of our information about Greek myths while the second is made more bearable by the fact that he is exceptionally scrupulous about recording what those sources are. Since most of these sources have been lost over time Diodorus' account is invaluable in piecing together what they said. This isn't to completely dismiss his flaws since he quite often misinterprets his sources or muddles the timeline. But while there are better sources for much of his material covering the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars, for the section covering the Hellenistic period Diodorus is our primary source. Unfortunately even his work is incomplete. Out of an original 40 books only books 1-5 and 11-20 survive intact. The rest exist only in fragments. Diodorus covers a lot of ground from the period before the Trojan War to Julius Caesar's Gallic campaigns. For that reason his book is divided into three sections. The first section (books 1-6) cover the carious myths in a historical way and are divided geographically. The second section (7-17) offers a history of the world from the Trojan War to the death of Alexander the Great. The third section (18-40) covers world history from the early Hellenistic kingdoms through to the campaign of Julius Caesar. Regrettably, most of that last section is missing. The division of the volumes in the Loeb series is rather atrocious. Why they split books in two I'll never know. While many have criticized Diodorus for being inaccurate, nobody has accused him of being dull. He's worth a read even if he's often of little use.

This book starts immediately after the end of the Peloponnesian War and ends in the middle of book 15 with no real resolution. This period is covered somewhat more reliably by Xenophon in his Hellenika and Anabasis. More so than Herodotus and Thucydides Xenophon is a tricky source because he lived through the times and has very strong opinions on them. For example, while an Athenian who studied under Socrates he was very close to the Spartans and was close personal friends with their king Agesilaos. In the name of their friendship he covers up many of that man's failings and errors of judgement. Even worse his hatred for the Thebans means that he doesn't even mention their great leader Epaminondas by name until his last book, attributing successful battles to the Thebans as a whole and generally denying him what credit he can. So for the first time we find in Diodorus a source that offers us a much more unbiased account of the time (probably derived from the works of Ephorus and Theopompus).

Love Diodorus. This picks up from the after the war and has the death of Alcibides, which varies from Xenophone. Enjoy!!
