Excellent book for my 9-yr old

We ordered this book for my daughter for her birthday. She has checked it out of the school library a few times and just loves reading it. It is easily one of her all-time favorite books. The other books by Shel Silverstein are great as well, but this one was her first sampling and she just loves it. A great book for elementary school-aged kids. My daughter is 9 and has been reading this since she was 8 and it is something I could see her reading for a few more years without getting bored of it.

This is the second book (Where the sidewalk ends by Shel Silverstein) I have read by this author. I found the first one (The Giving Tree) was delightful but short. This 166 page hardcover volume is also a fantastic read. The book is filled with short but expressive poems. Each poem also includes his unique and unusual drawings, which really make the book, come alive.

The author has an ability to amuse, entertain and even teach lessons with his unique approach to poetry and art. Some of the many wonderful poems in this book includes the following: Hug O’ war, it’s dark in here, colors, Joey, early bird, sky seasoning, the farmer and the queen, rain, true story, enter this deserted house, jumping rope, who, me-stew and many, many other wonderful poems and lessons. Even though this book is aimed at younger readers I think adults will also find it an interesting read.

If you are a Shel Silverstein fan you should check out this book. I found it an amusing read.

Sent as a gift

Children in the U.S. are SO lucky to have books at their fingertips. That is not the case in other countries.

Last year, I sent my friends new son a few books for his first birthday. I had no idea the books I sent were his very FIRST ONES! Apparently, literature is SO taxed, it is not easily available. I take children's books for granted. I think we all do.

Shel Silverstein brings back wonderful memories from my daughter's childhood and fortunately, she has passed on her love of reading to her own two daughters. I could not imagine childhood without certain books and I had to send "Where the Sidewalk Ends" to my friends for Christmas. This book is one that they can all enjoy (and it may be a bright spot in learning English for their wonderful little boy!).

I wish I could send more books to them. And I will. Over time.

Excellent! Should be required reading for ministers of all levels

This book excellently describes ethics in decision making and reveals ethical principles in the Bible that every minister of any degree should be required to read. I read this due to a class required by the North Carolina District of the Assemblies of God and have heard from several senior pastors that the guidance found in this book would save many a pastor from making ignorant mistakes in leadership.
Why is this needed for Christian leaders who should be moral already? Because this book reveals that people with good morals can be ignorant of unethical behavior which effects their leadership and those who follow them.

Sebastian Mallaby on Hedge Funds

I set out to write the history of hedge funds for two reasons. Explaining the most secretive subculture of our economy posed an irresistible investigative challenge; and the common view of hedge funds seemed ripe for correction. Hedge funds were generally regarded as the least stable part of the financial system. Yet they managed risk better than banks, investment banks, insurers, and so on—and they did so without a safety net from taxpayers.

Four years on, the book is done; and both my original motivations have been vindicated. Unearthing the story of hedge funds has been pure fun: From the left-wing anti-Nazi activist , A. W. Jones, to the irrepressible cryptographer, Jim Simons, the story of hedge funds is packed full of larger than life characters. Getting my hands on internal documents from George Soros’s Quantum Fund; visiting Paul Tudor Jones and reading the eureka emails he wrote in the middle of the night; poring over the entire set of monthly letters that the Julian Robertson wrote during the twenty year life of his Tiger fund; interviewing Stan Druckenmiller, Louis Bacon, and hundreds of other industry participants: my research has yielded a wealth of investment insights, as well as an understanding of why governments frequently collide markets. Meanwhile, the financial crisis of 2007-2009 vindicated my hypothesis that hedge funds are the good guys in finance. They came through the turmoil relatively unscathed, and never took a cent of taxpayers’ money.

Since the book has come out, many readers have posed the skeptical question: Do hedge funds really make money systematically? The answer is an emphatic yes; and without giving the whole book away, I can point to a couple of reasons why hedge funds do outsmart the supposedly efficient market.

First, hedge funds often trade against people who are buying or selling for some reason other than profit. In the currency markets, for example, hedge funders such as Bruce Kovner might trade against a central bank that is buying its own currency because it has a political mandate to prop it up. In the credit markets, likewise, a hedge fund such as Farallon might trade against pension funds whose rules require them to sell bonds of companies in bankruptcy. It’s not surprising that hedge funds beat the market when they trade against governments and buy bonds from forced sellers.

Second, the hedge-fund structure makes people compete harder. There is an incentive to manage the downside: hedge-fund managers have their own money in their funds, so they lose personally if they take losses. There is an incentive to seek out the upside: hedge-fund managers keep a fifth of their funds’ profits. This combination explains why hedge funds were up in 2007, when most other investors were losing their shirts; it explains why they were down in 2008 by only half as much as the S&P 500 index. People sometimes suggest that hedge funds survived the subprime bubble by fluke—perhaps their ranks include wacky misfits who are naturally contrarian. But there is more to it than that. John Paulson poured $2 million in the research that gave him the conviction to bet against the bubble. The hedge-fund structure created the incentive to make that investment.

Financial risk is not going away. Currencies and interest rates will rise and fall; there will be difficult decisions about how to allocated scarce capital in a sophisticated and specialized economy. The question is who will manage this risk without demanding a taxpayer backstop. The answer is hiding in plain sight: To a surprising and unrecognized degree, the future of finance lies in the history of hedge funds.

It's all about the importance of it's content, not how many pages

After finishing this book I can only give it the best compliment, I will read it over again and again. Yes, it's not very long and doesn't technically qualify as a book but it's contents are all that matter. For $10 this is a great investment for your short and long term success. Not many original ideas in here but the way the author has cooked it down to the most important details, I value it's simplicity. How many times have you read books that are 300+ pages and you wonder..."how come it couldn't be more respectful of your time"? This book respects the laws and respects your time to help you change as quickly as possible. I will let the information sink in for a couple of weeks and then I will reread.. I think that is the best compliment I can give the author.

The ideas in this book are absolutely amazing. I read part of it every day. It assists me to stay focused, and remember that I don't have to work all alone - there are "unseen forces" and powers that, if I tap into them, by law will multiply my results 10 fold. The Spindle Chair held me captive

Pierce Crane’s childhood trauma was buried deep until he becomes pastor of the church he grew up in and his wife becomes pregnant. Now he struggles with irrational fears that place his wife at more than arm’s length. Laurie lost her parents years ago she can’t lose her husband.
This premise of childhood trauma shapes every scenario in this novel. I love these characters. I rooted for them as they came to terms with the trauma and unrealistic expectations. Shellie Arnold has crafted a story of hope and healing that is realistic and empowering.
Shellie handled the couple’s intimacy and marriage struggles with subtle power. As Pierce’s trauma unravels and truths are revealed this reader found herself entranced by the journey. So many unexpected turns reminds the reader that recovery from these things takes time, prayer and often counseling. As he faces the truth behind each memory Pierce heals. The Spindle Chair is a great reminder of God’s power to heal if we let him.
The only thing I objected to was the formatting. For some reason the Epilogue in the e-book version was placed after a series of discussion questions for book clubs. I tend not to read those. If I wasn’t one to look for what info might be left at the end of the book I would have missed this lovely tie things up chapter.

Unique, Touching, and Memorable

Unique, touching, and memorable. I purchased the Kindle version of The Spindle Chair, anxious to read this first novel of a Facebook friend and fellow writer. I was not sure what to expect from Shellie's first fiction offering. I was more than impressed. I was moved. Shellie creates believable characters and a unique story line that captivates the reader. Pierce and Laurie are a young couple who dreamed of having children, only to endure the sorrow of a miscarriage. When Laurie becomes pregnant again, she believes their dream is about to come true. But her husband becomes more and more distant. They struggle in their relationship as Pierce deals with a troubling issue from his past. It could devastate their dreams. The author's ability to take the reader on such en emotional journey is remarkable for a first novel. I always like to read the acknowledgements to get to know the author better, the motivations behind the book, the research involved and how it came to be. When I read the acknowledgements in this book, I was again moved by what I read. Shellie shares of the health issues that affected her so much that she believed her writing dream had died. But God! Thank you, Shellie for sharing your personal struggle before your dream was resurrected. It truly touched me. I definitely recommend Shellie's book and look forward to the next one.

About the Author

Russ Shafer-Landau is Professor of Philosophy and Director of The Parr Center for Ethics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author, editor, or coeditor of several books including The Fundamentals of Ethics, Third Edition (OUP, 2014), Reason and Responsibility, Fifteenth Edition (2013), and Ethical Theory: An Anthology, Second Edition (2012). He is also the editor of Oxford Studies in Metaethics.

The Only College Reading I'll Every Enjoy!

The Ethical Life was required reading for Drexel's Philosophy 251. It is a composition of several works, which are extremely interesting and beneficial to general life. I would highly recommend reading it on your own accord. I personally read the sections that my course didn't cover because it was easy to read and well compiled. If you purchase this book, you won't regret reading it and the information you learn may make you a better, calmer, and more centered individual.

A very thought provoking yet calming read, this was required for a philosophy class. The composition of works in this book are very well chosen and interesting. A great choice for a college text, not nearly as dry as your regular college readings.
