Siege of Tarr-Hostigos (Kalvan Series Book 4), by John F. Carr

This second hardcover edition of SIEGE OF TARR-HOSTIGOS is the fourth book in the Kalvan Saga and begins right after Kalvan Kingmaker upon Kalvan’s return from the Trygath and his resounding military success over the invading nomad clans. Unfortunately, this military action has given Great King Lysandros a year to rebuild the Harphaxi army and, together with Styphon’s House, put together the Grand Host of Styphon’s House—the largest army ever assembled on Aryan-Transpacific, Styphon’s House subsector. Kalvan has awakened the sleeping tiger of Styphon’s House and they are out for blood. The Grand Host under the aegis of Holy Investigatory Roxthar—the Torquemada of Aryan-Transpacific, Styphon’s House Subsector—will bring the full-fledged religious war to Hos-Hostigos and the Five Kingdoms that Kalvan has always feared. This is a campaign that—win or lose—will cost Kalvan some of his good friends, part of his family and possibly the Kingship of Hos-Hostigos.

Attempts by Verkan Vall, Paratime Police Chief, to help Kalvan survive the Styphoni onslaught come to naught as he is frustrated at every level by Paratime bureaucratic regulations, the machinations of the Kalvan Study Team and First Level red tape. But far worse events will befall the University of Dhergabar Kalvan Study Team and Verkan himself, when they run head-on into the Styphoni juggernaut of the Grand Host at the Royal Foundry outside Hostigos Town. The courage and valor of Kalvan and his friends are put to the final test in this all-out war for the future of Hos-Hostigos and its royal family.

A Fitting Legacy: H. Beam Piper's Paratime Saga Continues
By David Johnson
In Siege of Tarr-Hostigos, John F. Carr continues his homage to H. Beam Piper's Paratime hero Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, a.k.a. Corporal Calvin Morrison. Building on earlier Kalvan sequels co-authored with Roland Green, Great Kings War and Kalvan Kingmaker, Carr's Siege takes place after Great King Kalvan, the former Pennsylvania state trooper and unwilling cross-dimensional interloper, has successfully foiled an attempt by the forces of the theocratic Styphon's House to overrun his kingdom with hordes of Sastragathi tribes. Instead, Kalvan managed to forge an alliance with the neighboring Trygath and turned the Sastragathi back upon the Styphoni, dealing them a crushing defeat. Siege opens with Kalvan facing a new threat, as Styphon's House, under the de facto leadership of Roxthar the Holy Investigator, throws its might behind the Great Kingdom of Hos-Harphax, from which Kalvan had originally carved his own Great Kingdom of Hos-Hostigos. All the while, the events of Kalvan Time Line are monitored and manipulated by the First Level Paratimers responsible for Kalvan's accidental transposition to this alternate world. Paratime Police Chief Verkan Vall--disguised as "Trader Verkan" to Kalvan--faces ever increasing pressure from the Opposition which has begun to use events on Kalvan's Time Line as a cover for their efforts to discredit the Paratime Police and gain control of the First Level Government.

Carr, editor of four anthologies of Piper's work (Paratime, Federation, Empire, and The Worlds of H. Beam Piper) and described by long-time collaborator Jerry Pournelle as "a recognized authority on the life and works of H. Beam Piper," uses his extensive familiarity with Piper's Paratime setting to craft a compelling story that begins to move beyond Kalvan's ongoing struggle with Styphon's House to a brewing crisis at the very heart of First Level Paratime civilization.

The series continues!
By C. A. Temm
John Carr has taken up the cause with Roland Green to continue the Otherwhen series created by deceased H. Beam Piper. King Kalvin (an American policeman lost in time)continues his struggle to save his adopted home in an alternate 1300s North America.

This book follows Carr's earlier effort in Kalvan Kingmaker in which King Kalvin had consolidated his power base in the new state of Hos Hostigos modernising the military and civil society (via commerce/education/land reform/political expansion. Roland Green has returned to add his considerable talents to a thought provoking and gritty series on an alternate world.

The battle scenes and overall plot development have improved with the return of Green working with his old partner Carr. The story itself follows in a logical order. The new characters have improved since The Kingmaker and the story catches one's attention quickly and holds it. Kalvin is under attack by a resurgent House of Styphon and is being battered on all fronts. His enemies have gotten their act together and even aid from the secretive Paratime police (of course unknown to Kalvin)is not enough...

You still have grand battles on the scale of the 100 Years War and wide spread strategies across the North American continent. Changes to society are in the making as old ways crumble in the face of Kalvan's efforts to mold a kingdom to resist Styphon's onslaught. Some of this is very PC (moves to let women enter the ranks of the fighting men,)but others have interesting ripple effects (orphans being raised as loyalists, roads, expanding the University, introducing the scientific method of investigation etc) on an entire world. New characters and societies are introduced and you see the pressures mounting on Kalvin's new country. Kalvin himself seems more human as self doubts pile on...

The weak point is the last chapter and ending, obviously it is set up for another book. Overall this is a better book than Kalvan Kingmaker and hopefully Mr. Carr and Green will continue their efforts to broaden the series strength. The book is worth purchasing, but the wait for the next in the series seems endless!

Good Read
By Amazon Customer
If you enjoyed previous novels in this series, you will probably enjoy this one as well.

There are so many sub-plots involved that the story as a whole moves forward slowly. The book ends as though the publisher were running out of space for more pages in one volume rather than the author having arrived at a good break point in the narrative.

Still, I want more.

Amazon.com Review
Joel Achenbach (Why Things Are) describes Captured by Aliens as a travelogue, a record of his strange journey into "alien country." With Carl Sagan as a sort of totem animal on this spirit quest (in fact, one of the author's first stops is Sagan's living room), Achenbach plots an eccentric course through the land of UFOs and the search for extraterrestrial life, going from NASA headquarters in Washington, DC to local MUFON meetings, from an asteroid-blasted quarry in Belize to a Las Vegas hotel room in which he's hypnotized by an alien abductee. He even visits the set of the X-Files. (Achenbach reveals Gillian Anderson's very un-Scully-like take on alien beings: "[T]hey operate, vibrate--this is going to make me sound like a complete nut--they vibrate on a different energy level than we do.")

With the investigative skill of a seasoned reporter (which Achenbach is, for the Washington Post) and the wit and charm of an NPR commentator (which he also is), Achenbach turns out to be the perfect companion for such a cosmic road trip. This curious, earnest, and frequently hilarious writer proves equally at ease with legit figures like Sagan and NASA administrator Dan Goldin as he is with self-described "Starseeds" (aliens in human bodies) and technophiles like Mars-booster Bob Zubrin. Achenbach knows his science, but he always brooks just the right amount of nonsense. --Paul Hughes

From Publishers Weekly
In energetic, engaging prose, Washington Post staff reporter Achenbach (Why Things Are) introduces readers to an eclectic mix of scientists, millennialists, channelers, UFOlogists, debunkers and true believers who have been captivated, if not captured, by the notion of extraterrestrial life. The central figures are Carl Sagan ("a visionary, a poet of science, a quote machine for reporters on deadline") and Frank Drake, who promulgated a famous equation to predict N, the number of intelligent, communicating civilizations likely to exist in a galaxy like ours. In 1975, Drake estimated N to be 10,000; Sagan guessed a million. Urged on by Sagan and Drake, scientists have tried to eavesdrop on cosmic chat. Nearly 25 years later, the scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligence has continued to reveal nothing, in Achenbach's view, beyond static and the optimism of its advocates. In addition to respected scientists, Achenbach travels to a UFO convention, where he meets a man convinced that the aliens have the medical technology to cure his aching back and that President Clinton traveled by spaceship from Arkansas to New York (it took 15 minutes). ET is here, say many of those Achenbach interviewed, but we don't believe the evidence because of government deception and coverups. Achenbach's book can be appreciated for its assortment of characters and for its witty style. Whether N is one or one million, and whether intelligence is the result of deliberate creation or natural evolution, he concludes, we are privileged to be members of a species able to wonder about it. From Library Journal
Journalist Achenbach has devoted much effort over the past several years to studying a broad spectrum of views on the question of extraterrestrial life, extending his inquiry from the most hard-nosed scientists to the most credulous, irrational members of the UFO fringes. The contents of his new book are best represented by the volume's subtitle; it is quite clear that Achenbach gives no credence to alien abduction stories or similar looniness. Despite his openness to hearing and reporting nonscientific speculation, in the end he supports science as the best method of inquiry in the notoriously tricky search for possible life in other worlds. His hero is Carl Sagan, who stretched far in the hope of finding extraterrestrial life but who, in the long run, honored the constraints of the scientific method. This book is well written, and Achenbach's adroit use of nicely timed, appropriate humor further enhances its readability. Although not a scientist himself, Achenbach has absorbed and reliably reported the current "state of the art." Strongly recommended for public and academic libraries.AJack W. Captured by Achenbach
By Kenneth Feder
Joel Achenbach has accomplished the impossible; he has written a funny, engaging, enormously informative, highly skeptical, yet, at the same time, touching book about the search for extraterrestrial life. He includes in his discussion of SETI, the work of scientific luminaries like Sagan and Drake, but perhaps the most fun here is his affectionate look at the oddly endearing folks who show up at UFO conferences with their heads shrouded in aluminum foil. As Achenbach shows, though the methods of the scientists and the UFO enthusiasts are wildly different, their passion comes from the same place in the human spirit. You will not find a better written book on the human cry in the dark: "Is anybody out there?"

Fun to read, but mixes apples with oranges
By M. A Michaud
This lively, amusing book touches on many ways that people relate to the cosmos, from astrophysicists to the Heavens Gate cult. That is a virtue, in the sense of providing the reader with a wide variety of material. It also is a weakness, in that highly reputable scientists are implicitly equated with flakes. The author should have drawn a sharper distinction between those he took seriously and those he found ridiculous. The net effect is to introduce a giggle factor into our views of anyone who finds the external universe fascinating and relevant to our future.
Achenbach is a bit too worshipful toward Carl Sagan and former NASA Administrator Dan Goldin. In particular, he glosses over the fact that Goldin's faster, better, cheaper policy led to three major mission failures in the late 1990's.

Lively accounting of fringe and mainstream views on ET
By Kevin W. Parker
Joel Achenbach, a reporter for the Washington Post, covers current thinking about life in the universe in this lively and very personal account.
The book is divided into three parts. The first part could be considered to reflect the "establishment" view, giving the perspective from mainstream science and personages including Carl Sagan and NASA administrator Dan Goldin. Even within the mainstream, though, there are controversies: the well-known one about whether meteorite ALH84001 contains life and the lesser-known issue over whether the Viking landers really did find signs of life, as one of the investigators on that mission continues to claim. Achenbach covers these as well as an overview of the Drake Equation, a profile of Dan Goldin, and other such relevant items.
Part Two takes a very different tack, covering the fringe: those who believe the aliens are here already, including those who think they themselves are the aliens (from the Pleiades, as I recall). Achenbach tries to be sympathetic to these, though not with complete success. As he concludes, "It is not the evidence of extraterrestrial creatures but, rather, the idea of the Alien that makes ufology such a powerful faith." As he makes clear, almost everyone would be delighted to find life elsewhere in the universe. The skeptics, however, require evidence before they will give in to their hopes.
All of the parts are rather loosely organized, jumping from subject to subject, but Part Three is the loosest of all, seemingly only tied together by the concept of "what might happen." Here he jumps from possible new technologies ("Zero Point Fields") that might get us to the stars, reports on a conference of Robert Zubrin's Mars Society, spends a chapter on the Mars Face, revisits what's going on now with SETI, and more.
He concludes with a celebration of Carl Sagan's enthusiasm tempered with skepticism: "A scientist needs evidence. Faith is not part of the game. ... Sagan's greatest professional achievement may have been his ability to stick to science and resist the incredible allure of sentimental thinking." The last paragraphs cover his funeral.
All in all, the book is comparatively lightweight but is easy reading and hard to put down. Those interested in a hard-science approach to astrobiology should consider books such as Rare Earth and Is Anyone Out There? But for an overview of both the mainstream and fringe viewpoints, this is an excellent book.

This classic play has been translated before, but only into a pallid approximation of the original joual. Scots, however, is an energetic and earthy vernacular with a distinctive sound system equal to joual. The play, a landmark in Canadian theatre, can now be truly appreciated in this superb translation, just as audiences in Glasgow and Moscow have learned to laugh with these ladies.

Ancient WarfareFrom Brand: The History Press

The authors examine the evidence of warfare in prehistoric times and in the early historical period in order to throw fresh light on the motives and methods of the combatants. Their study marks a significant new step in this fascinating and neglected subject, and creates the agenda for many years to come. By integrating archaeological and documentary research, the contributors seek to explain why some sides gained and others lost in battle. They also examine the impact of warfare on the social and political developments of early chiefdoms and states. Taking a crucial look at the nature and quality of the material evidence for warfare in prehistoric times, they look at weaponry and defensive structures. Their conclusions suggest a new interpretation of the evolution of warfare from the stone age and the bronze age, through the military practice of the Ancient Greeks and the Romans, to the conflicts of the Anglo-Saxons and of medieval Europe.

Warfare in Prehistoric Times.
By Michael Valdivielso
Ancient Warfare edited by John Carman and Anthony Harding explores not only warfare in prehistoric cultures by why it is important that we study it and how we study it. The fifteen chapters dive into the question about the very nature of war. Can people armed with stone weapons and defending their towns with dirt walls carry out what we would call war? When a ditch can be used to keep out invaders and keep in cattle, is it a sign of warfare? When a tool can be used as a weapon and a weapon can be used as a tool how can researchers prove if fighting existed in a society thousands of years ago? When is an arrow head just a piece of trash and when it is sign of a warrior culture? How important was trade to fighting or did fighting fuel trade?
The book takes a close look at the material evidence, the bones, the ruins, from the stone age, up to the bronze age and into the iron age. Most of the chapters deal with Europe, but one chapter does focus on North America. The origins of violence is examined and so is warfare as a larger part of human civilization. It asks us the hard questions: Do our modern views twist what we see in the past? Do our ideas of gender, our need for a peaceful or warlike past depending on our modern theories of human evolution, our seeing the sword as a warrior's weapon and ONLY a warrior's weapon make us blind to some of the clues needed to make a complete picture? Do we put too much weight on human aggression or is military conflict just a minor piece in the story of our ancient world?
The perfect book, new or used, for any library on military history or history in general.

Evil breeds evil.

After Kerrick Khumalo's wife is murdered in their home, he migrates from Africa to America for better opportunities. But his thick accent and dark skin makes him unaccepted. Unable to find legal employment, he discovers that the drug trade can be a lucrative business for the man who is willing to do anything, including kill. Self-possessed, he quickly rises to the top and becomes the most fearful man in Baltimore. Desiring it all, he marries a woman who gives him many children, and now he has a clan of his own.

In the country illegally, he changes his last name to Prophet and adopts rigid beliefs and customs. Soon, he develops a seething hate toward Americans and believes his bloodline should remain pure. So he encourages his children to breed amongst themselves. Year after year, he controls his family with an iron fist, and they all fear him. That is until Nine is born.

Forced to live secluded in the Prophet mansion, her future appears doomed. Besides, her mother's mental condition makes her a bad parent, and her father is too concerned with his wife. Amazingly, she finds strength and love from an unlikely source, the family s drunken maid. After a while, she proves to be far more intelligent than Kerrick's other offspring and this makes her both seductive and dangerous.

Silence of the Nine is Flowers in the Attic meets The Coldest Winter Ever. Prepare yourself for a dark ride.

Nine Prophet
By Ms. Mary- Member of Our Black is Beautiful Book Club
Kerrick is unlike any other father that you hear about. He is determined to be the king and part of that means keeping his bloodline pure. When Nine Prophet is born she is very much despised by her grandfather Kerrick because she represents what he tried to leave behind in Africa. Nine soon shows the entire family that she is not to be underestimated. Nine is back with a vengeance and nobody will get in her way.

Silence of the Nine just once again reminds me why T. Styles is one of my favorite authors. She definitely has a twisted mind that makes her stories one of a kind and unforgettable. Kerrick took me into the mindset of Yvonna from Shyt List.....only deadlier. I will continue to read books by T. Styles!

Great Read
By Ashia R
This book was very different from any book I've read. In the beginning I struggled with whether or not I wanted to complete the book but I continued on and I'm glad I did. You really get to see the main character's struggle with wanting to "live the American dream" on down to his own self hate. Kerrick wasn't my favorite character and if you read this amazing book I'm sure he won't be yours either. I highly recommend this book. It touches on some things that our AA community struggle with now. Nine will be the character that you root for from the time you meet her. Please get this book. It's great.

Bloody Good
By Misha
If you think you read anything about twisted families, you have not read this book!! This book is definitely a page turner! Whenever I had to put the book down I did whatever I had to do quick, fast & in a hurry just to get back to the page I left off. I think T.Styles is a phenomal author...I dont think there was a book by her that I didnt like.

You reap what you sow is a great message for this book. Kerrick was a freaking monster and he always got his way or shall I say danced his way around the ladies. What he did to Fran was just unnecessary and sick. Victoria was his ride or die no matter what the circumstances was even when it involved their children despite knowing that Kerrick was wrong. But how he treated his children was down right mean, evil, twisted & disgusted that is until Nine came into existance!!

Nine...she had me man...I was angry for her, I wanted revenge for her..I wanted to save her but she saved herself and they never knew what was coming. Nine is definitely bad ass and lethal and was more and more like Kerrick!
