The call of the streets....the desire to do the right thing...the need for love...

The "Trophy Wife" is another banger from Ashley and Jaquavis. Kalil is a young man fresh out of jail and he is on a mission to do the right thing. The right thing means taking care of his little girl Jada and working an honest 9-5 job for some shady Italians. Kalil is used to hustling and balling out of control with unlimited cash, but to stay out of jail for his daughter he will do the right thing...for a little while at least.

When Kalil meets the lovely London, Jada's dance teacher, he is immediately drawn to this beautiful woman. Kalil soon learns that London's husband is abusing her and she has the bruises to prove it. Kalil and London fall in love, and London knows she is playing with fire. London wants to feel real love and not like someone's property or punching bag. London and Kalil begin an affair and this sets off a chain of events that will change there lives forever!!!

Tragic Love

This book will leave you crying and asking why. All Kalil wants to do is provide for his daughter and baby's mother. But after he came home from doing four years in jail, he finds his baby's mother cheating on him with his rival. After that he tries to get back on his feet. He doesnt want to get back in the drug game, but working a 9 to 5 isnt his thing. When he finds out that his rival has been touching his eight year old daughter, the old him comes back. Then when he took his child away from her mom he has to start taking care of her. While he is doing that he meets London, his daughter's dance teacher. She was being abused at home, and when he tries to take her away from that he finds out that the person who is abusing her is the same person that helped him get to the top. Then when the guy finds out what is going on, all hell breaks lose.

Uhm?

I am now a fan of Ashley and Jaquavis. However, this book was a let down. It had a great start with Kalil telling his story from jail. But somehow it justed flopped after a while. The chapters started to become too predictable and seemed kind of amateurish. Kahil started to get on my nerve simply because he couldn't take no for an answer and in the end lost everything. I had to force myself to just finish to the end. It is not a great read and i just gave away the book.

Thompson (There's No José Here) details working alongside undocumented workers in this stirring look at the bottom rung of America's economic ladder. Thompson's project feels initially like a gimmick; that this middle-class white American can go undercover in the lettuce fields of Arizona or the poultry plants of Alabama seems more stunt (or rehash of Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed) than sound journalism. But the warmth with which he describes his co-workers and the heartbreaking descriptions of the demanding, degrading, and low-paying jobs quickly pull the reader in. Gimmick or no, the author pushes his body and his patience to the limits, all the while deferring attention to the true heroes: his co-workers, whose dignity, perseverance, physical endurance, and manual skill are no less admirable for being born of sheer necessity. What emerges are not tales of downtrodden migrants but of clever hands and clever minds forced into repetitive and dangerous labor without legal protections. In a yearlong investigation, journalist Thompson lived among and worked side by side with undocumented workers in the hardest, lowest-paying jobs offered by the U.S. economy. He went west to pick lettuce, south to work in a chicken-processing factory, and back home to New York to work in a restaurant kitchen. Along the way, he shared the low wages, backbreaking work, ill treatment, and camaraderie of people who work in the shadows. In Arizona, he recalls desperately trying to make the five-day rule: if you can survive the first five days as a farmworker, you will be fine, meaning you will get used to swollen hands and all-over aches and pains for $8 an hour. In Alabama, he finds the local white supremacists have updated their targets to Hispanic workers and documented workers beginning to challenge exploitive labor practices. In New York, he chronicles workers with so few prospects that they work multiple jobs with no benefits. One of the best books I've read in a long time

One of the best books I've read in a long time. I read it originally as an e book, but ordered a paper copy to share with friends. It is an inside look at the lives of the people in country who faithfully perform the tasks that most people don't want to do and that we take for granted.

Interesting book but skip the conclusion!

This helped made me to appreciate the work I don't have to do. It was a very interesting look at a day laborer's life - very hard work, often dangerous, with very little pay. I'm glad I read it. However, the problem I have is that the first 95% of the book was honest and unbiased. The last 5% was a political bashing. The author went completely off course and dedicated his final chapter to putting 100% of the blame on "Wall Street" for the last recession and "corporate greed" for all the hardship day laborers face. He then suggests that unions are the answer to the troubles the working man faces. Unfortunately, life isn't that simple, and there are a myriad of reasons why capitalism isn't a perfect economic system and why unions aren't always our savior. There are constructive ways we could improve the poor working guy's life - bashing corporations and "Wall Street" doesn't help.

Reading about the Shadows

This is intended to be the shortest review on record. The Amazon description tells you what the book is about and you're either interested or your not. What you also need to know is whether Gabriel Thompson is a good and engaging writer. Put simply, he is. He combines the economics about the business, his own life and the lives of the people he meets into a really engaging book. You come away with the feeling that Thompson would be a nice guy to meet as long as it wasn't in the middle of a lettuce field.

Neat, I like it.

This is such a great purchase. I have been noticing all the cool hand lettering stuff on Pinterest and Instagram for a while now, and I've been wanting to give it a try myself but I haven't known where to begin. I was looking for a basic intro and this popped up. I've tried a few others but they seem too complicated and I never actually got around to it. What I love about this book is that it's so user friendly. I would recommend photocopying the 5 blank practice pages as suggested in the book cuz the pages are quite thin. The projects are cool though and I've started making a fun banner for my friend's birthday!

What we love about this book is that it covers so many different areas when it comes to brush lettering. There are a lot of useful facts and fun exercises. You will also get to see the letters written in various ways which is a good guide for those who are trying to build up their own alphabet. But it does not stop there. The author has gone out of her way and has also added different facts on how to photograph your work, given an intro to bounce and flourishing, DIY projects, added different worksheets etc. It is truly the ultimate book

First of all this book is gorgeous! It's pages keep you captivated by all the fun quotes and fonts she writes in. The directions are so well written. I love seeing all the different letters written in different ways! I am so excited to keep practicing and learning hand lettering. I have taken a calligraphy class before and really wanted to expand my writing abilities. This book is great for beginners! It provides step by step instructions and teaches you the basics of calligraphy strokes too! I would recommend it to any beginner and any advanced writer to just learn new techniques!

About the Author
Mary Lou Conlin completed her education at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, earning a B.A. and M.A. in English, and a Ph.D. in education with concentrations in special education, reading, and curriculum. Conlin worked for over twenty-five years teaching English Composition and developing curriculum for developmental reading and writing at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. She developed individualized reading and writing instruction, and also established a Learning Center staffed with instructional assistants and tutors who provided both individual and small group instruction. In addition, Conlin developed computer-assisted instruction and tracking in the early 1980s.Her publications include PATTERNS, PATTERNS PLUS, CONCEPTS OF COMMUNICATION: WRITING, and CONCEPTS OF COMMUNICATION: READING. The Concepts texts, a modular series, became the basis for the individualized program provided through the Learning Center. Other publications include SIMON PERKINS OF THE WESTERN RESERVE, a biography of an early land agent of the Western Reserve published by the Western Reserve Historical Society.

I got this book for college, and I enjoyed reading it. I think it explains the basic rules to properly analyzing readings, such as essays and short stories. In addition to that, the books comes with sample stories and essays that help its readers better understand important concepts of analytical reading.
